This invention relates to new and useful improvements in holders for various articles such as cigars, cigarettes, erasers, pencils, and the like.

More particularly, the invention contemplates the construction of a holder as mentioned which has a double grip action.

It is further proposed to so construct the double grip holder that it may be used for other purposes besides holding articles, such as forming a closure for bottles or vessels of various descriptions.

Another object of the invention is the construction of a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a double grip holder constructed in accordance with this invention and shown supporting a cigar.

Fig. 10 is a side elevational View, with certain portions broken away to disclose interior parts, of a double grip holder constructed in accordance with a modified form of this invention and shown holding a small cylindrical object.

Fig. 11 is an elevational view looking in the direction of the line I l-| l of Fig. 10.

The double grip holder, in accordance with this invention, includes an externally threaded frusto-conical shaped member Ill having slots H extended inwards from its base end and forming resilient jaws 52 which are adapted to grip an article, for example, the cigar l3 illustrated in Fig. 1. A cap M has a conical shaped opening l5 which is provided with threads complementary to the threads on the member ill for engaging thereon and forcing the jaws l2 into gripping positions. The threads on the member 19 and cap M are of the multiple type so that these parts may be threadedly engaged by a turn of approximately 300".

The term complementary as used in this specification means that the member Ill and cap I 4 cooperate when engaged to force the jaws into gripping position.

A smoking device 26 is mounted on and coax-- ially through the said cap M and member Ill. This smoking device l6 comprises a mouthpiece ll adapted to be engaged between the teeth, and a small tube l8 projecting from the mouthpiece.

. The mouthpiece H has a passage l9 which comvention is similar to municates with the passage of the tube 18. The free end of the tube I8 is formed with a pointed portion 20 adapted to engage into the inner end of the cigar l3 or other similar article. This pointed end 20 is formed with perforations 2| through which the smoke may pass. The tube I8 is formed with exterior threads 22 which threadedly engage a corresponding opening in the end of the cap 14. It is in this way that the parts are connected together. The tube H! extends through a central opening 23 formed in the inner end of the member Ill.

Fig. 1 shows the double grip holder firmly holding the cigar l3 so that it may be smoked. The cigar may be removed by turning the member I0 slightly relative to the cap I so as to disconnect them from their threaded engagement. This releases the resilient jaws 12 which then release the cigarrette l3. To facilitate relative turning of the member l0 and cap l4, they are arranged to project one from the other while in their engaged positions, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

In Figs. '7 and 8, the double grip holder is shown as a joining connection between a smoking pipe proper l3 and its stem l3". With regards to parts H], H and I2 this form of the inthe previous form and the corresponding parts may be recognized by corresponding reference numerals.

In Fig. 9 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed in which the double grip holder is shown to be used as a closure for a vessel, such as the vessel 25. This double grip holder includes an externally threaded conical shaped member In having slots ll extended inwards from its base end forming resilient jaws l2 for gripping an article. A cap M has a conical shaped opening complementary to the threads of said member II) for engaging thereon and for forcing the jaws l2 inwards into gripping positions.

A handle 26 is shown mounted upon the cap M to facilitate the handling thereof. The base end of the member l has an edge portion I8 turned inwards so as to be capable of gripping the neck of the vessel 2-5. A sheet of rubber 27 is extended over the neck of the vessel 25 and then the double clip holder, in accordance with this invention, is engaged thereon and grips the rubber sheet 2? and vessel together as a unit. This serves to seal the vessel 25.

In Figs. 10 and 11 another modified form of the invention has been disclosed. In this form ofthe invention the double grip holder is shown supporting a partially cylindrical piece of eraser 2B or other similar article. The holder is composed of an externally threaded conical shaped member it" having slots Ii extended inwards from its base forming resilient jaws for gripping the article 28. A cap M" has a conical shaped opening which is provided with threads complementary to the threads on the member ID" for engaging thereon and forcing the jaws thereof into gripping positions. The cap M" is also pro vided with several slots 30 which are extended inwards from its base to form adjacent resilient compressible portions. Means is provided for holding these compressible portions in various compressed positions. The means above includes a flexible annular member 3!, such as a strip of metal engaged within a peripheral groove 32 formed around the bottom portion of the cap 14''. The strip 3! has its ends 31 and 3N bent outwards. A block 34 is welded upon the end 3P. A screw 35 rotatively passes through the end 3| and threadedly engages the block 34. The construction is such that the screw 35 may be turned for holding the compressible end portions of the cap id" in various compressed positions. This will control the degree to which the resilient jaws of the member ID" are forced inwards into gripping positions. It is thus possible to adjust the holder so that the article 28 is firmly and properly gripped.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. A double grip holder, comprising an externally threaded frusto-conically shaped member having slots extended inwards from its base end forming resilient jaws for gripping an article, and a cap having a frusto-conically shaped opening which is provided with threads complementary to the threads on said member for engaging thereon and forcing said jaws inwards to grip an article, said cap having several slots extended inwards from its base end forming resilient compressible portions, and means for holding said compressible portions in various compressed positions.

2. A double grip holder, comprising an externally threaded frusto-conically shaped member having slots extended inwards from its base end forming resilient jaws for gripping an article, and a cap having a frusto-conically shaped opening which is provided with threads complementary to the threads on said member for engaging thereon and forcing said jaws inwards to grip an article, said cap having several slots extended inwards from its base end forming resilient compressible portions, and means for holding said compressible portions in various compressed positions, comprising a band extending around the base portion of said cap, and means for contracting said band.

3. A double grip holder, comprising an externally threaded frusto-conically shaped member having slots extended inwards from its base end forming resilient jaws for gripping an article, and a cap having a frusto-conically shaped opening which is provided with threads complementary to the threads on said member for engaging thereon and forcing said jaws inwards to grip an article, said cap having several slots extended inwards from its base end foring resilient compressible portions, and means for holding said compressible portions in various compressed positions, comprising a band extending around the base portion of said cap, and means for contracting said band, said band being housed in a groove around the base portion of said cap.
