TRAVELING-TRUNK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,683, dated October 26, 1880.

Application filed July 26, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MARVINE, of Delhi, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Trunks; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of a trunk provided with my improvements, represent ing the cover raised; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section thereof, the cover being shown as closed down.

Like letters designate corresponding parts in both figures.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a trunk-cover which will not be liable to injury in handling the trunk, it being well known that this part of a trunk and its hinges are most liable to injury.

Various means have been devised to correct this defect, among which may be mentioned metallic clasps attached to the cover and embracing the ends and front side of the trunkbody as the cover shuts down, and the common valance on the cover shutting down on the outside of the trunk-body.

My invention consists in a cover adapted to shut down inside of the trunk-body, in combination with a shielding cover, of leather, sheet metal, or equivalent strong but thin material, attached to the cover proper, and having edges which shut down outside of the end and front side of the trunk-body, together with a strap secured at the back ot the trunkbody and detachably connected with the back ends of the said downwardly-proiectin g edges, so as to hold them securely in place, substantially as hereinafter specified.

The hinges and lock are to be adapted to this construction and arrangement of the trunk-cover. Thus it will be seen that the trunk-cover is nearly or quite protected from all violence or injury, except the falling of a heavy weight directly down thereon.

The upper corners of the trunk-body may be braced or shielded in the same way as the lower corners, and thus a very strong trunk may be made. a

In connection with the cover B, shutting down into the upper part of the trunk-body, I employ a shield or guard, O, of thick leather, canvas, sheet metal, or other suitable material, covering and secured to the cover, so as to rise and descend therewith, and having downwardlyprojecting flaps or edges b b, which close down around the upper part of the trunk-body when the cover is shut down, and thus shield and protect the upper edges of the trunk-body, its cover, and the lock. These flaps are held securely in place when the cover is closed by means of a strap, D, secured to the back part of the body and entering a buckle, c, at the rear end of each end flap, as shown in Fig. 1, thus securing all in place. Front vertical straps may also be used for additional security.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of a trunkcovcr, B, adapted to shut down inside of the trunk-body A, with a shielding cover, 0, attached to the cover B, and having downwardly-projecting edges 1) 1) outside of the body, and with a holding-strap, D, on the back of the body, detachably connected with the back ends of the said projecting edges, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
