Description
J. CARRINGTON.
Mole-Plow.
No. 23,348. Patented Mar. 29, 1859.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOEL oAEEINeToN, or AVOOA, NEW YORK.
IM PROV EM ENT IN MOLE- FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,348, dated March 29, 1859.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. JoEL GARRINGTON, Of the town of Avoca, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Draining-Plow; and [do herebydeclarethat the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accomp mying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a drainer, standard ,colter, point, and brace, and when fully connected together form a quick, easy, cheap, and durable mode of draining lands by forming a tunnel under ground.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and opt ration.
1 construct my drainer No. 1 of cast or wrought iron from two to three feet longand from three to eight inches in diameter at the back end and about one third smaller at the front end, causing a gradual taper from back to front. Standard No. 2, attached to drainer No. l at the bottom, is constructed of cast or wrought iron about one inch thick and from twenty to forty inches high and from fourteen to twenty inches wide. Golter No. 3 I make, of steel or iron about one inch thick, about four inches wide, and the length of standard No. 2. Point No. 4 is connected to colter No. 3 at the bottom and attached to drainer No.1 at the front end by means of a shank on the front end of the drainer entering the heel of the point, so as to hold them firmly together,
the heel of the point No. 4 being the size of drainer No. l at the front end. The point being sharp at the front end causes the plow to pass through the ground without any obstruction.
1 construct the beam No.5 of wood. Standard No. 2 and colter No.3 pass up through the beam and keyed on the top, holding them firmlytothebeamNoG. Therolleronthefront end of the beam gages the depth of the drain; No.7, the clevis; Nos. 8 and S,'the handles to guide the plow, being attached to the beam by means of a bolt, which holds them firmly to the beam; No. 9, a rod connecting the handles in the center, and supported by brace No. 10, passing from drainer No. 1 up through the beam and connecting cross-rod No. 9, which holds the handles firmly to the place No. 11 round which keeps the handles a proper distance apart.
This plow is constructed of wood and iron, and can be constructed with but little expense.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination and arrangement of a replaceable pointed colter with a continuous plate or solid standard carrying the mole, and a brace in the rear connecting the said mole to the beam and also to the handles, in the manner substantially as herein described.
JOEL OARRINGTON.
