Description

J. STEINMEYEE. Perrule for Awl Handles.
No. 233,295. Patented Oct. 12, I880.
WITNESSES: INVENTOiz/ SW32 M f;
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS STEINMEYER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FE'R RU LE FOR AWL-HANDLES.
sPEo'IEmA'rroN forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,295, dated October 12, 1880.
' Application filed February 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUS STEINMEYEE, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ferrules for Awl-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to prevent splitting of the awl-handle, to secure both the ferrule and leather pad firmly in place, and to furnish a durable and serviceable awl-handle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my improved awl-handle. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end View with the clam pin g-screw for the awls removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the awl-handle. ais the ferrule at the larger or outer end; I), the leather pad 3 c, the ferrule at the smaller end, and d the screwring and clamping device, of usual character for securing awls to the handle.
The ferrule a is formed on the inner surface with a screw-thread, by which it is held securely on the handle, and the pad I; is heldin the upper end of the ferrule a by the thread. This construction permits ready application and renewal of the pad, and the handle is prevented from being split or battered by use. The ferrule c is also secured in place by the screw-thread formed on its inner surface, so" that it cannot come off by the wood shrinking,
and this ferrule prevents the lower end of the.
handle from splitting. end of the handle, as shown at f in Fig. 3, and the ferrule 0 being formed with a tapering screw, it will act to clamp the handle uponthe shank of the ,awl and hold the same more steadily than the clamping deivicedwould of itse tf.
Having thus described my invention, I
I also slot the lower,
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters
