Pencil clips or clips for vlike purposes, as usually constructed, are secured to the pencil or pen cap by pins, rivets, clamping means, or by cementing the clip to the article, and such clips effeet their clamping or securing action by pinching or clipping the edge of the pocket or of the material to whichthe article is to be secured between a ball or projection on the end of the clip and the body of the pencil barrel or pen cap. When the clip is spread to receive the material, strain is placed on the securing means and in time may cause the loosening of the connection between the clip and the article to be clipped.

Another difculty has arisen in connection with the usual type of clip, this diiculty arisng'irom army regulations which require that the pocket aps onarmy blouses be closed and buttoned. This cannot be done if a pencil or pen projects above the edge of the pocket.

This invention has for one of its objects to provide an improved pencil clip so constructed that the material or pocket edge will be engaged or clipped between two parts of the clip.

Another object of the invention is to provide a clip so constructed that the pencil or like article can be clipped to the pocket and the top of the article will not project materially above the upper edge of the pocket,

Another object of the invention is to provide a clip so constructed that the securing means for securing the article to be clipped will also function to hold the pencil cap and pencil body together.

Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawing which forms a part of this application and in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a pencil having mounted thereon a clip constructed in accordance with the invention;

Fig. 2 is an elevational view, partly broken away, taken at right angles to Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is an elevational View taken at right angles to Fig. 1 but looking in the direction opposite to Fig. 2 and showing the clamp of th clip in section; f

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the clip is shown in conjunction with a pencil but it will -be understood that it can be used on a pen or any other desired article.

The clip comprises a strip of resilient material or metal' having at one end a clamp comprising arcuate clamping members Ill and II. in the drawing, the strip has an upwardly extending portion I2 and is bent back upon itself at I3 to form a downwardly extending leg I4 which is provided at its lower end with a ball or projection I5. It will be noted that theball I5 is disposed opposite the wall of the clamp and coacts with this wall to pinch the edge of the` pocket or other material between the ball and the body of the clamp. As the ball and leg I4 are forced outwardly when the clip passes over the edge of the pocket no strain is placed onthe securing means which securesthe clip to the article, such as the pencil illustrated. Althoughin the drawing this securing means is shown as a clamp, it should be understood that the clip may be secured to the -pen cap or. pencil by pins, rivets, or by cementing the clip in a suitable manner to the article. f

In Figs. 1 to 3 and 5, the clip is shown as secured to a pencil comprising a body or barrel 20 and a cap 2I which carries the eraser 22. The barrel 20 has formed therein'adjacentvthe upper end, as shown in the drawing, a groove 23. The cap ZI has formed therein a'groove 24.

The clamping members IQ and II are provided at the lateral edges thereof `with flanges 25 which are adapted to extend into the grooves 23 and 24 and in this manner aid in securing the cap 2| to the pencil barrel or body 20.

From the showing in the drawing it will be evident that the edge of the pocket over which the clip is secured can extend upwardly to the bend 23 and thus the article or pencil will be disposed within the pocket and below the upper edge thereof. In this way army regulations are complied with. l

From the foregoingspecication it will be clear that a simple and practical construction of clip has been designed and that the clip constructed in the manner described will effectively carry kout the objects of the invention. Moreover, by eliminating the strain between the clamping leg of the ordinary clip and the securing means which secures the clip to the article, a material advantage has been gained.

Although one specific embodiment of the invention h'as been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the vspirit cr scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.

As shownY What I claim is:

l. In combination, a member to be secured to a pocket edge, a pencil clip comprising a strip of spring material, and a resilient clamp at one endof the strip for securing said end of the strip to said member, said strip being bent back on itself in a substantially U-shaped bend and h'av ing a projection' on the free end adaptedito c'oact with the other leg of the strip to clamp material therebetween and interengaging means on the clip and member so spaced from the end of the member that the closed end of the U-shaped bend Will not extend beyond said end of the member.

2. In combination, a pencil comprising a pen#` cil body and a pencil cap, said body h'aving a' depression at the end thereof adjacent the 4cap,

said cap having a depression adjacent said body depression, and a clip having clamping means provided with spaced projecting portions adapted to seat in said depressions in the body and cap.

3. In combination, a pencil comprising a penembracing a pencil, said jaws havingspaced in- Wardly extending projections thereon.

5. A pencil clip having a resilient clamp at one end thereof, said clamp having arcuate jaws for embracing a pencil, said jaws having spaced inwardly extending projections thereon, said clip being bent back on itself in a direction away from the clamp and having a projection on its free end adapted tocoact" with the portion of the clip adjacent the clamp to secure th'e clip to a pocket.
