GENRY A. CHAPMAN, OI STRAWBERRY POINT, IOWA.
PEPE CUTTER AND WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,937, dated October 5, 1880.
Application filed August 21, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GENRY A. CHAPMAN, of Strawberry Point, in the county of Clayton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Pipe Ontter and 'Wrench, of which the following. is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, strong, and effective tool that serves as a cutter and wrench for pipe and as an ordinary monkey-wrench.
The invention consists of a tool having a movable reversible jaw whose lower end rests against an adjustable nut, which traverses on the screwthreaded handle of the tool, and whose upper or operating end is held to the shank of the fixed jaw by a clamp or yoke, and is adjustable therein by a set-screw in said clamp or yoke.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device operating as pipe wrench or tongs. Fig. 2 is alongitudiual front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a reduced side elevation ofthe device operating as a pipecutter. Fi g. 4 is a reduced side elevation of the device operating as a monkey wrench.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the fixed shank of the tool, having at one end the fixed o jaw a, while at the opposite end said shank A is prolonged into a screw-threaded handle, I),
- on which a nut, B, traverses, and to which a wooden handle may be secured.
O is a clamp or yoke attached to the sides of the shank A and extended in front of and at right angles to it, and provided with a setscrew, D, that passes down through its crown.
E is the movable shank or jaw of the device, which consists of a straight bar having one end cut away at opposite corners, as shown at c 0, thereby leaving a central projecting triangular point, d, that serves as a cutter or blade for cutting pipe.
When the tool is not in use the jaw or shank E is laid along the face of the shank A, within the yoke C, with its jaw end against the fixed jaw a and the nut B screwed up against its opposite end, and the set-screw D is turned down upon it to hold it more securely. The nut B, instead of simply bearing against the end of said jaw E, may be suitably attached thereto.
When the said tool is used as a pipe wrench or tongs, as shown in .Fig. 1, the nut B is retracted on the handle I) of the device, the setscrew D is turned up, and the jaw end of the jaw or shank E raised so as to admit the pipe to be operated upon between the jaws to and E, which pipe is represented at 1 the fiat face f of said jaw E being made to engage upon the said pipe F by means of the screwing up of the nut B and the screwing down of the set-screw D.
When the tool is used as a pipe-cutter the jaw E is reversed and the cuttingpoint (:5 brought in proper contact with the pipe E that is to be cut by turning the nut B and set-screw D, as may be required.
The said tool may be used as an ordinary monkey-wrench by retracting the nut B so that the jaw E may be drawn back far enough along the face of the shank A to permit the jaws of the tool to embrace the nut g, or other object to be operated upon, when, by turning up the nut B, the object 9 is held fast and the jaw E held firmly in place by turning down the screw-nut D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let.- ters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a pipe cutter and wrench constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the shank A, having jaw 60, screw-threaded handle I), carrying adjusting-nut B, yoke O, set-screw D, and adjustable reversible cuttingjaw E, as set forth.
GENRY A. CHAPMAN.
