Such-Edevice's, while reasonably satisfactory, are from being idea-l or foolproof in their construction and leave much to be desired in the way of length-of life, safety in "use and versatility of applicability. lviost razor blade holders embody .parts which are :dificult to keep clean or sterile and which usually involve the use' of screw shafts and nuts for tightening and clampin purposes. Many-of the devices of this nature which areintended :for use with ol'o1.1b.l'e--edged blades having -open'ings through the body thereof requ-i-re' speciel loss or projections to be fiormedon or inthe holder in order to secure even reasonably firm positioning of the blade. These holders are'onlyzada pted-for use with one specific type of blade. -T-hey;a r especially characterized by the fact that-th(-: y;fre v quently cannot be used in narrow or cramped spaces and must always be used on only one side V due to the 'p-rojectingwscrews, nuts, etcnon the other side andwhich would undesirably scratch, score or'otherwise mar the surfaces being Worked upon. is art or will awing l'have illustrated 25 of the slot 24 are depressed, being bent inwardly and downwardly and therefore forming a depressed seat, the purpose of which will be explained hereinafter. Viewed from the side, as in Fig. 2, it will be noted that this seat is below the level of the arm and is inclined upwardly from [front to rear, i. 1e, toward the blade-holding portion of the arm. The terminus of this arm is a flat, marginal portion 28 which is connected by a T-shaped locking element 3| which rises substantially vertically from such arm. A trapezoidal opening 32 is thereby formed in such arm asa result of the removal of material therefrom for the locking member to move forwardly to the narrow portion described and to seat itself as described. In this condition the device is ready for use, and by observing Fig. 2 especially it will be noted that there is little or no projection of the locking element. above the surface of the slotted arm. Thus the device can be employed without respect to a top or bottom, thereby enabling the objects and advantages hereinabove set forth to be achieved; The insertion of a double-edged blade is the same as that described for a single-edged blade, and it will be apparent 7 that in employing a double-edged type of blade the formation of the element 3|, the opening 32 i being a trapezoid rather than T-shaped due to the fact that it is generally preferable from a production or mechanical point of view. to strike up an initially trapezoidal piece and then to shap or notch out the same to produce a T-shaped element. as to provide a complementary fiat marginal portion 33 adapted to form with the marginal portion 28 of the other arm a pair'of Jaws or pincers. The lateral ends of this portion 33 are, however,
bent upwardly at right angles to provide short :3
lateral upstanding flanges 34, the distanc between the inner sides of which is only slightly greater than the length of the said marginal portion 28. The arm terminus is further provided with a concave-convex intermediate portion 35, I
which, however, is the reverse of that of 29 so thatthe concave sides of these two portions face each other and the convex sides are accordingly on the outside surfaces of the pincers. This portion of arm 20 hasa rearwardmarginal-portion 36 which is somewhat dished or depressedin a direction opposite in curvature to the portion 33 already mentioned so that inthe contacting posi tions of portions 28 and 33 a more or less uniform space is formed within which is adapted to be received and gripped the thickened edge of a singleedged blade; The ends of portion 36 areflanged at 31. The rearward edge of the armterminus is provided with thespaced upstandin flanges 38 which form a stop or limiting barrier as well as a guard. Portions 29 and 35 will, under these conditions, engage the forward edges of stiffener I3, thus immobilizing the blade. Part 28 is preferably and optionally provided with projections 28a which are adapted to seat in the notches 34a in part 34 and thus form a positive interengaging supplemental means.
Thisdevice is capable of utilizing any known form of razor blade. In using the single-edged type Qfblade, the pincers are separated and the blade placed in such position that the stiffener l3 thereof lies in the space which is formed between the portions 30 and 36, the twoarms being The terminus of this arm is soconfigured arm; whereupon the said locking element moves forwardly and bar 39 seats itself on-the depressed 7 seat already describe'd. The parts are so constructed and arranged that the tendency is for the blade is inserted until it abuts the spaced flanges 38 on therearward edge of the portion 23 and that the portions 28 and 33 engage the same and hold it sufiiciently firmly for the desired cutting, scraping or other operations. The flanges 34 prevent side slip of all types of blades and the flanges 38 act as guards to prevent inadvertent damage by the rearward edgeof a douend by a suitable unitary bend and converging at'their distal ends to form a pincer-like portion, said arms having interengaging' portions formed therein for maintaining the pincer-like portion in a condition which is adapted to immobilize a suitable cutting and scraping element when placed therein; said interengaging portions including a T-shaped slot in one arm and a substantially T-shaped projection in the otherarm, saidslot being so formed that its cross-bar portion is" transverse to the major axis of its arm and the triangular portions between the bar extensions and the stem thereof are inwardly and.
downwardly shaped to form a seat below the level ofsald arm. V 2. A cutting and scraping device composed of sheet metal having a body portion composed of a pair of substantially parallel arms connected at one end by a sheetmetal bend and having their distal ends formed to provide a pincer-like portion for receiving and holding a razor blade, said'pincer-like portion being made-up of a pair of elements one of which is provided with a flat marginal portion, a rearward offset marginal portion and a'concavo-convex intermediate portion, convex side outward, and the other of-which is provided with a fiatmarginal portion each end of which is bent over to provide an end flange, a rearward marginal portion having spaced upstanding flanges on itsrearward edge and a concavo-convex intermediate portion therebetween, convex side outward, thereby forming when said members are in contact a recess for the admission "of a blade-stiffening element and guard means for preventing undesired rearward or lateral movement of such element.
