COVER FOR LAl`,L&E BOOKS Filed Jan. '1*2, 1942 ATTORNEYS Patented May 18, 1943 COVER FOR LARGE BOOKS Maynard R. Hultman and Cart E. Hultman, Crafton, Pa.
Application January 12, 1942, Serial No. 426,516
2 Claims.
This invention relates to covers for large books, especially public record books, such as deed and mortgage books, but is not limited to this type alone.
An object of the invention is to provide a cover formed of ply wood recessed at the rear edge to receive the leaves of the vhinge and clamp strips to cover the leaves, the recesses being stepped so that the strips are llush with the surfaces of the ply wood cover and thus the book will be of uniform thickness without projecting edges at the hinge.
A further object is to provide a device of this character in which the use of ply wood eliminates seasoning after the book is finished and also warping of the cover as well as distortion of the cover at the hinge will be positively prevented.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be formed of a few strong, simple and durable part-s, which will be inexpensive to manufacture, and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter l fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ply wood book cover showing the hinge leaf and clamp strip, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View showing the p13r wood cover provided with stepped recesses at the rear edge to receive the hinge leaf and clamp strip.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail cross sectional view showing the ply wood cover having a bevel at the notched rear edge so that the clamp strip and leaf are recessed below the surface of the covter.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the hinge leaf.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, IS! designates a book cover formed of ply wood or similar material, preferably fabricated of three layers or plies. The rear longitudinal edge of the cover is provided with stepped recesses iI and I2, the former being of a depth equal to the uppermost ply or layer, and
the latter being of a depth equal to about threefourths of the thickness of the intermediate ply or layer, as best shown in Figure 2. A plurality of openings I3 are formed in a longitudinal row and open through the lowermost step or recess I2 and through the bottom ply of the cover to receive pins I4.
A metal hinge leaf I5 of the type used in the hinges of large ledgers and books, is received in the lowermost step or recess I2 and is of sufficient thickness to be flush with the intermediate ply of the cover, as best shown in Figure 3. The hinge leaf is rolled upon itself at the rear longitudinal edge to provide a tube I6 for receiving a hinge pintle, not shown, the tube having notches I'I at intervals and having extensions I8 at the ends to coact with the companion hinge structure of conventional backs of large heavy volumes. The hinge leaf is provided with a longitudinal row of openings I9 to receive the pins I4. A clamp strip 20 is superposed upon the hingeleaf and is of the same thickness as the uppermost ply of the cover, and is of suiiicient width to ll the step or recess II and overlap the hinge leaf. The rear longitudinal edge of the clamp strip extends ush with the rear longitudinal edge of the cover. The clamp strip is provided with a longitudinal row of openings 2l to receive the pins I4. The upper surface of the clamp strip extends ush with the upper surface of the uppermost ply of the cover so that the entire cover and hinge assembly is of uniform thickness throughout, as best shown in Figures 1 and 3.
In Figure 4 is shown a modified form of the device in which the uppermost step or recess 22 is provided with a bevel 23 on the longitudinal inner edge and the clamp strip 24 is only of sufcient thickness to extend with its top surface flush with the bottom of the bevel when received in the step or recess 22. Thus, the hinge portion of the cover is of less thickness than the remainder of the cover. This being the only difference between the modified form of the invention-and the first described form of the invention, a description of the other parts constituting the hinge need not be repeated.
From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explana tion.
What is claimed is:
1. In book covers, a cover member formed of y ply wood fabricated of three plies, the rear longitudinal edge being provided with a pair of stepped recesses, one of the recesses being of a depth three plies, the three longitudinal edges provided with a pair of stepped recesses, the center ply having a recess equal to about three fourths of the thickness thereof, a metal hinge leaf received in the recess of the center ply and having its upper face flush with the upper face thereof, and a clamping strip in the recess cf the upper ply and flush with the upper face thereof and overlapping the hinge leaf to the rear longitudinal 10 edge of the lower ply,
