BY Cfiadas 1/ SiLome' Patented May 11, 1943 PUNCH Charles V. St. Louis, Oak Park, Ill., assignor to Wilson-Jones Company, Chicago, 111., a corporation of Massachusetts Application April 15, 1942, Serial No. 439,006
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a punch for perforatin loose sheets of paper or similar material.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and inexpensive punch which will be positive in its operation. Other objects of this invention will become apparent upon reading the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of a punch embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of the punch plate;
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the plunger;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken along the lines IVIV of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the punch handle;
Figure 6 is a cross sectional view taken along the lines VIVI of Figure 4; and
Figure 7 is a cross sectional View taken along the lines VII-VII of Figure 4.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 2 indicates a base member provided with a pair of upstanding arms 3. The base member is shaped to form a chip receptacle and is provided with a sliding closure member 4. The base member is also provided with a. sliding side gauge 5 secured thereto in any suitable manner. In the preferred embodiment the entire punch base is formed of molded plastic material, and a metal punch plate 6 is secured to the base member by means of the rivets 1. The punch plate is provided with a pair of apertures 8 adapted to cooperate with the punch pin 9 in the punching operation. It will be understood that in the event the punch base is made of metal instead of plastic material, the punch plate may be dispensed with.
Each arm 3 is apertured, as indicated at In, to receive a punch pin 9. The upper portion of the aperture I0 is enlarged, as indicated at H, to form a shoulder I2 upon which a coiled spring I3 is seated. The upper portion of the arms 3 are apertured to receive a rod l4. The handle I5 is provided with a shaft l6, which is provided with an eccentrically spaced aperture I! mounted on the rod I4.
A pair of plungers I8, each of which is provided with a collar [9 fitting snugly over the ends of the shaft I6, are each apertured, as indicated at 20, to receive the upper end of the punch pins 9. The punch pins 9 are secured in the apertures 20 by means of pins 2|.
When the handle I5 is depressed the eccentric shaft l6 forces the plungers I8 downwardly, and these plungers l8 carry the punch pins with them. When the handle is released the coiled springs I3 force the plungers I8, and the punch pins 9, upwardly to clear the throat 22 of the punch.
Although I have described one embodiment of my invention in detail, it will be understood that the description thereof is illustrative, rather than restrictive, as many details may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact details of construction described, except as limited by the appended claim.
I claim:
In a punch, a, pair of upstanding arms each apertured to receive one end of a punch pin, an eccentric shaft mounted on said arms, a pair of plungers mounted on said shaft, said plungers each having an aperture adapted to receiv the other end of one of said punch pins, and a coiled spring inserted with each of said punch pins, said springs having their opposite ends positioned in said apertures.
CHARLES V. ST. LOUIS.
