This invention relates to means for supporting a smokers pipe in an upright position, more particularly when it is deposited on a level or flat surface, such as a table. It is well known that the ordinary smokers pipe, unless provided with a fiat base, tends to fall over on its side if placed on a table or like surface, with the result that ash and/or ignited particles of tobacco fall on to said surface and cause damage. An object of the present invention is to provide a device for avoiding this tendency.

According to the invention a smokers pipe is adapted to be supported on a substantially flat surface in an upright position by means of a stand consisting of a base portion adapted to rest squarely on said surface, which base portion is permanently or detachably secured to the pipe so as to project from the underside thereof.

The stand, provided with a plurality of feet, has its upper portion constructed in the nature of a clip or circlet adapted to embrace the stem of the pipe. More particularly said upper portion is constructed in the form of a spring clip adapted to grip the pipe stem resiliently in a detachable and longitudinally adjustable manner.

To enable the invention to be more clearly understood and carried into practice, reference is now made to the accompanying drawing in which like reference numerals denote like parts throughout the views.

Referring to the drawing, reference 8 desig nates a spring clip part adapted to grasp a pipe stem. The clasp 8 is attached to a solid base part 9 provided with inwardly flush-folding legs H] and H, hingedly located in recesses at each end of the base 9. A flat leaf spring l2, by pressing resiliently against flats on the hinged ends of the legs l and H, retains them in either the open or closed positions as clearly shown in Fig. 2, by full and dotted lines respectively. The leg Ii! provided with a single foot, is adapted in the closed. position to lie in the space between the two feet of leg H.

From the foregoing it is believed that the construction of the device may be readily understood, and it will be apparent that changes may be made in the details illustrated without departing from the spirit of the invention, as expressed in the claims.

What I claim is:

1. A device for supporting a smokers pipe on a substantially flat surface in an upright position, comprising a base adapted to be secured to a pipe and having a groove in the bottom thereof, legs hingedly connected to the base and adapted to fold inwardly toward one another into said groove and flush with the bottom of the base when the legs are not in use, and spring means operatively connected with the base for holding the legs in either open or closed position.

A device for supporting a smokers pipe on a substantially flat surface in an upright position, comprising a base adapted to be secured to a pipe and having a groove in the bottom thereof, legs hingedly connected to the base and adapted to fold inwardly toward one another into said groove and flush with the bottom of the base when the legs are not in use, and spring means operatively connected with the base for holding the legs in either open or closed position, one of said legs being bifurcated and the other adapted to extend into the crotch of the bifurcated leg when the legs are in folded position.

A device for supporting a smokers pipe on a substantially flat surface in an upright position, comprising a base adapted to be secured to a pipe and having a groove in the bottom thereof, legs hingedly connected to the base and adapted to fold inwardly toward one another into said groove and flush with the bottom of the base when the legs are not in use, and spring means operatively connected with the base and arranged in said groove for holding the legs in either open or closed position, said spring means comprising a leaf spring having its medial portion secured to the base and. its ends pressing resiliently upon the inner ends of the hinged legs.

A device for supporting a smokers pipe, comprising a base adapted to be detachably secured to the stem of a pipe and having a groove in the bottom thereof, legs hingedly connected to opposite end portions of the base and. adapted to be folded inwardly toward one another into said groove into a position flush with the bottom of the base when the legs are not in use, one of said legs being bifurcated and having a crotch, and the other leg being adapted to extend into the crotch when the legs are in folded position, and a leaf spring arranged in said groove having its medial portion secured to the base and its ends pressing resiliently upon the hinged ends of the legs for holding the latter in open or closed positions,
