`OFFICE This invention relates to package holders and more especially to holders for use with cigarette packages or the like which are provided with a wrapper so folded at the bottom as to provide a thin passage of the same width as the package leading from one side to the other. v

An object of this invention is a simple, inexpensive and easily operated holder having "a base and one or more tongues associated therewith in such manner as to extend into or through the passageway to secure the 'package to the base.

In one embodiment of the invention, 'the base is of such design as to provide 'a recess for receiving the bottom of the package and is provided with one or more slides equipped with a tongue adapted tc be inserted into one end of the passageway at the bottom of the package to secure the latter to the holder. Preferably, the holder is rotatably attached to a support and interconnecting means are provided o-n the slide or slides and the support, whereby rotation of the holder relative to the support is effective to reciprocate the slide or slides to locate the tongue or tongues beyond one or both ends then move the tongue or tongues into one or both ends of the passageway to secure the package to the holder.

Other objects, novel features and advantages of this invention will ceco-me apparent from the following speciiication and accompanying drawing, wherein:

In the embodiment herein disclosed, the frame or base i is preferably composed of molded plastic material and is of rectangular configuration. The frame is formed with a central rectangular recess II at the ends of which are provided transverse slots I2. The frame is pivotally attached to a support I3 through the medium of a stud I4 formed integral with the frame, the stud being locked to the support I3 by a resilient split ring collar I5 tting in a groove in the stud.

The support I3 comprises a hollow box-like member having a removable bottom member It, provided with hinge loops Il. A plate I8 has hinged loops I9 in alinement with the hinge loops of the passageway and Y I1 and also 'the support IT is provided with aper- 'tured ears Z also in alinement with the hinge loops I'I.l A hinge pin 2l extends through the ears 2i] and hinge loops E9 andk I1 and is provided with means, not shown, for adjusting the friction lbetween the plate I8 and the support I3 for the 'purpose later to be described.

A pair of slides 22 engage the support i3 and their outer ends are provided with tongues 23,

-each of which extends through a slot l2, the inner 4ends of the ltongues preferably being slightly upturned and slightly tapered. Each slide is provided with an elongated transverse'slot 24 into which projects a pin lcarried by the support I3. The arrangement of the slots 24 is such that rotation of the frame or base Ill relative to the support I3 causes reciprocation of vthe slides 22. Each ofthe slides 2'2 is provided with a struckup tab 26 which engages the under iace of the bottom of the frame recess to steady the slides during their back and forth movement.

Fig. 2 illustrates the normal or holding position of the slides and tongues while Fig. 3 illustrates the releasing position of the slides and tongues. In order to associate a cigarette package with the holder, the bottom end of the cigarette package is introduced into the base recess with the base in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The package is then oriented about itslongitudinal axis to swing the base into the position shown in Fig. 3. Such swinging movement of the base causes outward movement of the slides 22 to move the tongues beyond the ends passageway of the cigarette package. cigarette package is turned reversely to bring the base back to the position shown in Fig. 2. Such return movement of the base causes inward movement of the slides Z2 to locate the tongues 23 in the ends of the bottom passageway of the cigarette package and hold it rmly in position.

Fig. 1 illustrates a use to which the holder may be put. For this use, the plate I8 is projected into the window-'frame of an automobile door and is provided with a locking tab Ia for holding it in such position. The support I3 may be swung between a position in which it is alined with the plate I8 or is at right angles thereto, the latter position being shown in Figs. 1 and 4. A cigarette package may be inserted in the base when the support I3 is alined with the plate I3 as previously described, after which the support may be returned to the position shown in Fig. 1. I claim:

l. A holder for packages having a bottom passageway leading from one side to the other, said holder comprising a base having a recess to receive the bottom of the package, a tongue associated with said base and adapted to enter one end of said passageway, a slide supported by said base and having a tongue'adapted to enter the other end of said passageway, a support, a piv' otal connection between said base and said sup port, and inter-engaging means on said `slide and said support for effecting to and fro movement of said slide upon angular movement of said base relative to said support 2. A holder for packages having a bottom passageway vleading from one side to the other, said holder comprising a base having a recess to 4receive the bottom of the package, two slides supported by said base for movement toward and away from each other and having tongues adapted to enter opposite ends of said passageway, and means for eiTecting movement of said slides toward and away from each other.

3. A holder for packages having a bottom passageway leading from one side to the other, said holder comprising a base having a recess to receive the bottom of the package, two slides sup ported by said base for movement toward and away from each other and having tongues adapted to enter opposite ends of said passageway, a support, means pivotally connecting said base to said support, and inter-engaging means on said support and slides for effecting movement of the latter toward and away from each other upon angular movement of said base relative to said support.

A holder for packages having a bottom pas- 5 sageway leading from one side to the other, said holder comprising a base having a recess to receive the bottom of the package, two slides supported by said base for movement toward and away from each other and having tongues l0 adapted to enter opposite ends of said passageway, a support, means pivotally connecting said base to said support, and means including a pin and slot interconnecting each slide with said base, said slots being so angulated as to elect 15 movement of said slides toward and away from each other upon rotation of said base relative to said support.

5. A holder for packages having a bottom passageway leading from one side to the other, said holder comprising a base having a recess to receive the bottom of the package, a tongue associated with said base and adapted to enter one Aend of said passageway, a slide supported by said base having a tongue adapted to enter the other end of said passageway, and means rotatable relative to said base for effecting reciprocation of said slide.

6. A holder for packages having a bottom passageway leading from one side to the other, said holder comprising a base having a recess to reoeive the bottom of the package, two slides supported by said base for movement toward and away-from each other and having tongues adapted to enter opposite ends'of said passageway, and means rotatable relativeto said base for effecting movement of said slides toward and away from each other.
