(ModeL) W. S. GUY. Tobacco Hoisting Apparatus. No. 231,309. Patented Aug. 17.1880.
YVITNESSES 0 ATTORNEY N.PETEH8. PHGTQLITNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. GUY, OF NOTTAWAY COURT-HOUSE, VIRGINIA.
TOBACCO-HOISTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,309, dated August 17, 1880.
Application filed J one 24, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. GUY, of Nottaway Gourt-House, in the county of Nottaway and State of Virginia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tobacco- Hoisting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail.
This invention has relation to means for raising and lowering tobacco in barns and dryin g-houses and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the suspended carriage having an elongated guideway or slot, the cross-bar having a pulley, and the hoistin g-rope attached to the carriage passing over the pulley and descending through the guideslot of said carriage, the fall of the rope serving to guide and direct the same, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the tier poles or beams in the barn or drying-house, and B is a movable and adjustable cross-bar, which is designed to be placed with its ends resting on two of said poles, said bar being moved from point to point, according to requirement. To the middle of the bar is secured a pulley, a, over which passes the hoisting and guide rope G, to one end of which is attached the carriage D. As usually constructed by me, this carriage consists of an upright center piece or stem, 11, and two cross-pieces, c c, secured thereto and arranged parallel to each other, so as to form a guideway or slot, (Z, on one or both sides of the center stem; or it may be so constructed as to run the length of the cross-pieces. The guideway or slot is closed at its ends, and the fall or downward branch 0 of the hoisting-rope is passed through it and serves as the means of directing and guiding the carriage in its ascent and descent.
Instead of forming the guide-slot between the cross-bars in the manner illustrated, it may (ModeL) be formed by a long staple, or a sliding ring or ring and staple may be employed.
To the arms of the cross-piece are attached the hooks h for the tobacco-sticks, extending on each side, as shown, so that two sticks can be carried at the same time. Through the lower end of the stem portion of the carriage an aperture, k, is made, and the hoisting-rope passed through this aperture may be wound upon the cleat l, which is secured to the side of the stem.
In operating this device the sticks of tobacco on each side of the cross-piece are, as nearly as possible, kept parallel to the tier-poles, or at right angles to the cross-bar B. When the carriage is down it is made to stand erect by seating the lower end of its stem in a footbloek,-m, having a square aperture, a, and by passing the fall of the rope over a button, 9, at the upper end of the stem of the carriage. The foot-block also prevents the carriage from turning around while standing. If one stick of tobacco only is to be carried at a time, the hoisting-rope is to be passed around a pin or peg in the side of the top of the stem of the carriage above the stick, so as to transfer the point of suspension to that side on which the stick is placed.
In raising and lowering the carriage the engagement of the fall of the hoisting-rope with the slot or guide of the cross-piece enables the operator to guide or direct the carriage so as to bring the tobacco-sticks to the proper position for transfer to the tier-poles.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with a suspended tobacco-stick carriage and its cross-piece having a slot or guide, (I, of the hoisting-rope O, at-
tached to the upper end of said carriage, and
the fall 6 of said rope engaging said slot or guide and forming the means of directing said carriage, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the cross-bar B and its pulley a and the suspended carriage D, of the hoisting rope U, its fall 0, and the slot or guide of said carriage, substantially as specified.
3. The suspended tobacco stick carriage,
IOC
consisting of the center stem, b, the parallel directing the same in ascending and descend- 1o cross-pieces c c, forming the guideway (I, the ing, substantially as specified. hooks h, the lower aperture, 7c, and the elect In testimony that I claim the above I have I, substantially as specified. hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 4. The combination, with a suspended toof two witnesses.

portion of the hoisting-rope, of a connecting- Witnesses:
guide, whereby said fall is connected to the T. W. DYSON,
carriage and made the means of guiding and B. W. GUY.
