3 Claims. (01. 292-124) My invention relates to door stops and has particular reference to devices for holding doors or other objects in a fixed position.
My invention has for its object to provide a device for holding a door in an open position,
. the device being adapted to .be fastened to a stationary object such as floor or wall and having a movable hook-shaped member with a. spring urging the member into an operative or locking position. The hook-shaped member has a cam-shaped outer portion adapted to be engaged by the edge of the door when the latter is moved into the open position, the pressure of the door against the cam portion of the member causing the latter to recede and to admit the door to the other side of the hook where the door is stopped by a resilient projection on the device. The spring brings the member back into the operative position, locking the door in the open position.
In order to reduce the shock and jar when the door strikes the member, the cam-shaped portion in a horizontal plane, a pedal being provided for movement in a plane at an angle to the plane of the locking member, preferably at right angles thereto, so that the pedal can be conveniently depressed by a foot when it is desired to release the door. v

My door stop,' as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a frame .or housing i with flanges .or
feet 2 for attaching. the same to astationary object, such as a floor indicated by a line'l l, Figs.
in the frame at I for rotation in a horizontal plane. The bar has ahook 5 for engaging the side of a door 6, a resilient bumper I being provided at the other side of the frame for stopping the door-when it is moved past the hook 5. A spring 8 urges the hook againstthe door.
The outer end of the member 3 has a camshaped portion 9 which is slidabiy engaged by the edge of the door when the latter is moved against the bar, thereby depressing the bar and permitting the door to pass beyond the hook 5. The portion 9 is preferably of a'concave shape in order to reduce the first shock when the door is rapidly moved against the bar, the first angle a (Fig. 5) being relatively small. The angles a of the tangents to the curve are gradually increased toward the base' of the curve in order to gradually increase the rate of movement of frame and moves in a slot in. the frame.

I have found is obtained when the force applied to the hook by the door is substantially constant, the resistance (considering the acceleration) being also constant. The curvature of the hook is therefor so .selected as to reduce thehshock when it is struckby the edge of the door. being preferably of a parabolic type with progressively increasing angles of its tangents.

I claim as my invention:
1. A door stop comprising a box-shaped frame adapted to be attached to a stationary object;
a bar pivotally supported in the frame on a sub-- ably engaging the bar for moving the bar awa from the door.
2. A door stop comprising a box-shaped frame adapted to be attached to a stationary object;
a bar pivotally supported in the frame on a substantially vertical axis, the outer end of the bar having a hook extending outside the frame for engaging the edge of the door, the outer side of the hook having a cam-shaped surface adapted to be slidably engaged by the door when the latter is moved over the hook, thereby retracting the bar; yieldable means to urge the hook into an operative position for engaging the door; and a pedal pivotally supported in the frame having a cam-shaped side slidably engaging the bar, the pedal being adapted to be depressed in direction transverse to the plane of the bar for moving the bar away from the door for releasing the latter.
3. A door stop comprising a frame adapted to be attached to a stationary object; a bar pivotally supported in the frame on a substantially vertical axis, the outer end of the bar having a hook for engaging the edge of the door, the outer side of the hook having a cam-shaped surface adapted to be slidably engaged by the door when the latter is moved over the hook, thereby retracting the bar; yieldable means to urge the hook into an operative position forengaging the door, the bar having an opening; and a pedal pivotally supported in the frame on a substantially horizontal axis and passing through the opening, the pedal, when depressed, being adapted to move the bar away from the door in a plane at right angles to plane of the pedal.
