Description
' No. 23,118: PATENTED MAR. 1, 1859.
E. N. SO'HERR.
AUTOMATIC GHIME.
rm: NDRRIS PETERS cm. wasnmcrou, u. c.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT orrioa EMILIUS N. SCI-IERR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
AUTOMATIC BELL-RINGER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,118, dated March 1, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, EMILIUS N. SOHERR, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Chime; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and in which the same letters of reference allude to similar parts in both views, of which Figure l is a sectional side view of my improved automatic chime, and Fig. 2 an elevation of the same.
My invention consists in the employment of a barrel or cylinder A of any convenient length or diameter, the periphery of which is provided with any desired number of holes for the reception of steel pins 6 Z), placed on parallel lines and secured to their places by nuts on the inside, but easily removable for the purpose of changing their position, so as to vary the airs to be played.
B is a bar, which rests at each end in the frames C and acts as a fulcrum for the keys D. These keys correspond in number with the divisions of holes in the barrel and are so placed as to be depressed by contact with their respective pins in the barrel, thereby communicating motion in an opposite direction to the links E, which by means of intermediate levers H and links I actuate the hammers K. The hammer being thus elevated until the key is liberated from the pin, is thereupon from its own weight permitted to fall, striking the bell in its descent. To prevent a recoil or second blow of the hammer, I introduce springs L, bearing against the inner side of the hammer arm in the manner shown at Fig. 1.
The axle M of the barrel has its hearings in the frames C and extends beyond one oi its bearings for connecting the motive power, which may consist in clockwork of any suitable construction or size, driven and regu lated by weights or their equivalents.
Having now described the nature of my invention, I wish it to be understood, that I do not desire to confine myself to the described construction and combination of the parts in every minutia, as the same may be modified or equivalents substituted without impairing my invention; I also do not desire to confine myself to any peculiar form or particular number of bells or divisions in the barrel; but
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The herein described manner of automatically producing music from bells by the employment of adjustable pins Z) in the barrel A, actuated by clockwork or other motive power and giving motion to the hammers D, in any manner equivalent to that herein shown and described.
EMILIUS N. SCHERI-l.
Vitnesses PETER HAY, Enw. C. Gnnnrr.
