PlPE-GRAPPLE FOR OIL AND OTHER WELLS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,783, dated August 3, 1880.

Application filed December 1, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES BYRON JENKINS, of WVarren, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented anew and Improved Pipe-Grapple, of which the following is a specification.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement shown as applied to a pipe. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken through the line -00, Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of the invention is to make a grapple for lowering pipes into wells that may he detached from the pipe automatically by sliding it down on the pipe until it comes in contact with a coupling.

The invention consists in a grapple formed of two curved plates provided with interlocking arms so constructed that the plates may be applied to th opposite sides of the pipe, and made to clasp the pipe by lifting one of the plates, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents a section of pipe having a coupling, B, attached to its lower end for connectingit with an adjacent section. The grapple is made in two parts or pieces, B O.

The part B consists of a curved plate, 1), having curved arms E formed upon its upper corners, which arms E have hooks upon their ends.

The part 0 consists of a curved plate, Gr, having curved arms H formed upon its lower corners, the said arms H having hooks upon their ends. The curvature of the plates and arms is such that the hooks of the arms E H will interlock upon the opposite sides of the pipe A. The upper edge of the plate Gris beveled upon its outer side, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that it may take hold of the pipe A.

To the middle part of the upper edge of the plate I) is attached an eye, I, to which is attached the end of a short chain, J. The other end of the chain J is attached to an eye, K, attached to the middle part of the lower edge of the plate Gr.

To the eye K is also attached the end of a Windlass or derrick chain, L.

In using the grapple the two parts B (J are. interlocked around a pipe, A, and when power is applied to the chain L the upper edge of the plate G will be drawn against the pipe A, and the part 0 of the grapple will act as a lever to draw the part B against the pipe A, claspin g the said pipe firmly. By slacking the chain L the grapple will be allowed to slide down the pipe A to any desired point.

When the grapple is to be detached it is allowed to slide down the pipe to a coupling, against which the lower edge of the plate D strikes. This stops the part B and causes the arms E H to unlock, so that the grapple can be withdrawn.

This construction makes the grapple very convenient for lowering pipes into and raising them from wells, and its compactness allows it to be used with facility in bored wells.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A grapple for lowering pipes into wells, that consists of a curved plate, D, having curved hook-arms E upon its upper corners, and a curved plate, H, having curved hook-arms upon its lower corners, said plates having, respectively, the eyes I K, connected by a chain, J, as shown and described.
