SCARF AND NECKTIE HOLDER.

. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,755, dated August 3, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. DAvIs, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scarf, Necktie, and other Fastening or Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in scarf and necktie holders; and the object of the improvement is to render the loops which tit upon the necktie or scarf and upon the collar capable ot' clasping these pieces of wearing-apparel with sutlicientpower to insure the retention of the holder in position, and also the scarf or tie, such clasping hold upon the collar and scart' or tie being produced by having the wire forming the loops drawn inward Vor inclined at certain points.

This construction of the holder, together with the penetra-tillg-points formed on it, renders it a very efticient device for the purpose mentioned, and for holding a ticket or card on the lapel ot' the coat, also for retaining the cord of eyeglasses, and for other purposes.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective View of the fastening and holding device as manufactured for sale. Fig. Z is a front view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section, of a shirt colla-r, scarf, and my improved fastening or holding device as used together. Fig. 4 is a front view, showing a slightly-modied form.

A represents the improved fastening device; B, a shirt-collar, and C a scarf or tie.

The back clasping-bows, a a, of the device A are formed by bending a piece of wire at its middle in a downward direction, in a plane with the length of the wire, and then bending the ends of the wire in an upward direction in a plane at right angles to the lirst bend; and the front elasping-bows, b b, are formed by again bending down the ends of the wire in the same plane that it is bent to form the bows a, a; and in making these last bends the points c of the wire are made to terminate (Model.)

a considerable distance below the bend ofthe bows a, and these points are sharpened or brought to a fine point either before or after the bends are made in the Wire of which the device A is formed.

The bows a and b are made to act as springclasps by drawing the wire inward at opposite points, as indicated at d.

In making the iirst bend in the wire the distance between the turned-down portions thereof should be sufficient to afford a tirm hold upon the band of a shirt-collar, and also to locate the two bows b, which clasp the tie or scarf', a sufficient distance apart, to insure a iirm hohl upon it, and the points should be ot' a length sutlicient to retain their hold upon the fabric, notwithstanding the scarf or tie may work up and down some distance.

A fastening device similar to the one 'described may be employed on thc back part of the shirt-collar, as well as on the front part, and its pointed ends will be inserted into the back or middle portion of the strap ot' a scarf, or into the tie, as the case may be. In this application of the device the first bend thereot' will come on the inside of the collar-band, the same as in its use upon the front of the collar.

In many instances these fastening and holding devices A will be found useful for holding tickets or cards upon the lapel of a coat, also for fastening the cord of eyeglasses, and when thus used the pointed ends c are inserted into the lapel of the coat, and the ticket or card or eyeglass-cord placed into clasping-bows a d.

/Vhat I claim as my invention is- An improved scarf and necktie holder, A, consisting of a single piece of wire bent to form end loops or bows, a a b b, spring holding-clasps d d, and pointed ends c c, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
