Description
Dec. 29, 1942. R. H. DEAN OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE i Filed Sept. 11, 1941 2 Shets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR. For flay/K W 15 flffO/iWKY)? Patented Dec. 29, 1942 i] i'i'E STAT ii S AT E OUTSEDE DOOR HANDLE Roy H. Dean, Detroit, Mich., assignor to Ternstcdt Manufacturing Company, Detroit, Mich, a corporation of Michigan Claims.
This invention relates to handle assemblies.
The outside door handles have of late years been almost universally made of die castings. It is the object of the present invention to afford a handle in which a large part of the die casting metal heretofore used is saved and stampings used in place thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a handle assembly.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a handle.
Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are sections on the corresponding section lines of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the same.
Figs. 9 and 10 are sections taken on the corresponding section lines of Fig. '7.
The grip portion of the handle is formed by the stamped channel arm I with the channel outwardly facing. A die cast hub 2 and head 3 which are one piece are die cast around the handle shank spindle 4. The die cast head has four rivet-like projections 5 which are part of the casting. When the channel portion is assembled onto this head, the channel walls are folded in over these rivets and the rivet ends are riveted over flush with the outer wall of the channel arm. This ties the channel arm securely to the die cast head. Then an ornamental scalp 6 of stainless steel or chromium or-nickelplated sheet metal is fitted over the outwardly facing channel and die cast head and the edges folded under the channel plate as shown at 1 in Figs. 3, 4 and 5.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. '7,
8, 9 and 10, the die cast head 3 is located at the extreme end of the arm of the handle. The channel section arm la is an inwardly facing channel. Only two lugs or rivets are required in riveting the head to the arm. The scalp 6a is fitted over the back of the channel and a second backing plate scalp 9 is fitted over the inwardly opening channel of the arm. In this form of the invention the spindle has two knurled portions H to tie the die cast head and hub to the spindle, but both the connection in the form of the invention shown in Figs. '7 to 10 and the connection between the hub and the spindle shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive is a breakable connection so that when the handle is forced, the connection will break and protect the lock parts.
What I claim is:
1. A handle, and particularly an outside door handle for an automobile body, comprising a spindle, a combined hub and head die cast on the spindle and confined to the end of the spindle, a channel arm secured to the head and forming the core of the grip portion of the handle and an ornamental scalp fitted over the channel arm.
2. A handle, and particularly an outside door handle for an automobile body, having in combination a spindle, a combined hub and head die cast over the spindle, the said head formed with protruding integral lugs or rivets, a channel arm having the side Walls of the channel pro vided with rivet receiving perforations and folded over the head and the rivets and the rivets riveted down to tie the channel to the head and an ornamental scalp fitted over the channel.
3. A handle, and particularly an outside handle for an automobile door, having in combination a spindle, a combined hub and head die cast on the spindle with a breakable connection therewith, a channel arm folded over the head and riveted thereto and an ornamental scalp fitted over the channel arm.
4. A handle, and particularly an outside handle for an automobile door, having in combination a spindle, a combined hub and head die cast on the spindle and confined to the end thereof, a channel arm forming the lever part of the handle and folded over the head and riveted thereto, an ornamental scalp fitted over the channel arm, the said channel being outwardly facing and the scalp covering the opening in the channel and forming the outside surface of the handle.
5. A handle, and particularly an outside handle for an automobile door, having in combination a spindle, a combined hub and head provided with integral lugs and die cast on the spindle and confined to the end thereof, a channel arm folded over the head and riveted thereto by upsetting said lugs and an ornamental scalp fitted over the channel arm, the said channel being inwardly facing, a thin metal backing plate and the ornamental scalp covering the back of the channel and the edges thereof turned over to hold the backing plate in assembled relation.
ROY H. DEAN.
