UNITED. STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON TOFFLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GRATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,679, dated August 3, 1880.
Application filed April 30, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON TOFFLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graters, of which the following is a specihousehold and other purposes an improved grating implement, by which the operation of grating is accomplished easier and quicker, which is stronger and less liable to wear, and capable of being cleaned with greater facility and convenience than the common graters in general use.
The invention consists of a main piece or plate provided with a series of projecting pins or teeth, and of a hinged and perforated clearing 'ilate, which is fitted to thepins and main plate and adapted to be thrown back for easier cleaning.
In the drawings, Arepresents the main piece or plate, of wood, cast-iron, or other suitable material. one end with a handle, a, and at the opposite end with supporting-legs b b. The middle or main portion of the main plate is provided with a series of projecting pins, (7, of metal, which are either driven, cast, or otherwise secured into the plate A. Over the middle toothed portion of the plate A extends a perforated clearing-plate, B, which is preferably hinged to the plate at the handle end, so as to be thrown up and back over the handle. The
perforations d d are so arranged that they fit over pins, the holes being of sufficient size to admit the clearing of the projecting pins in swinging back the clearing-plate or in placing it in position over the pins. The clearingplate 5 has downwardly-bent side flanges, 66, which serve to secure the clearing-plate on The main plate A is provided at the main plate when it is placed into position thereon. The pins project above the clearingplate and act'with great force upon the article to be grated, being less liable to wear than the punched-up teeth of the common sheet-metal graters in general use.
The series of teeth' exert a more powerful grating-action, while by the useof a larger gratingsurface the operation is performed quicker.
When the grating is accomplished the clearing-plate is lifted from the pins, so as to remove all the adhering gratings therefrom, and then both the perforated plate and the teeth cleaned with great facility.
I am aware that perforated cleaning-plates have been employed in curry-combs, brushes, and similar articles; but in one case the main plate or back is not solid, but perforated, and in the other case the clearing-plate can only be raised to a certain distance from the main plate and not replaced when removed entirely from the brush. Neither device can be used as a grater, which is the main object of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-.
1. A grater composed ofa solid main plate having projecting pins or teeth, and of a perforated clearing-plate, which is adapted to be placed over the pins and to be removed therefrom, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improvement in graters, the combination of a-solid main platehaving projecting pins or teeth \vith'a perforated clearingplate hinged to the former, substantially as described. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of, two witnesses, this 21st day of April,
SIMON TOFFLER.
