SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,645, dated August 3, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it' known that l, J oHN MoEToN, of

Thornville, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of fences known as portable fences, constructed in sections, and having posts to which said sections are secured.

My invention principally consists in a portable fence-post composed of a horizontallyextending base, two uprights extending therefrom, one of which is fixed and the other of which is movabie relatively to the fixed upright, a brace extending from the fixed upright to the base, and means, preferably con- .sisting of a wedge, acting upon the movable upright to canse it to clamp between it and the fixed upright the lon gitudinally-extendin g sections or portions of the fence. Such post is preferably also provided with a diagonal brace, to which the fixed upright is secured, and which is provided at one end with a loop or hook for the reception of the clampingwedge.

The invention also consists in details of construction hereinafter to be explained.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a portion of a portable fence embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of the fence on the line a' Fig. l; and Fig. 3 represents a plan of one of the posts and a portion of two fence-sections.

The fence-sections which are to be united together to form the felice may be variously constructed. They maybe composed, like the sections A in Fig. l, of upright boards or cleats, a, to which are secured longitudinallyextending boards or strips, 11,' or, if desirable, in order to make them lighter, or for other reasons, they may be made like the section B, in which longitudinal boards or strips b are used only at each side, and the central part is filled up by wires c, which are run back and forth and secured by staples.

C designates posts-which are employed to secure the sections of fence together, so as to form a continuous line. These posts are each composed of a horizontally-extending basepiece, d, which rests upon the ground, and is suiciently long to aiord a stable bearing.

From the base-piece d there extends upward a fixed upright, e, secured, at or near the top, to an iron brace, f, and a movable upright, g, which, as here represented, is pivoted to the base-piece d, and movable relatively to the iixed upright.

As here represented, the brace f is secured at its lower end to the base-piece d, and is provided at the top with a laterally-extendin g portion, j", which serves as a guide for the movable upright as it is moved forward or back.

The boards b of two adjacent sections are inserted between the two uprights, so as to `overlap each other, as represented in Figj,

and means employed for securing the movable upright g to the iixed upright e, so as to clamp the fence-sections securely between them.

As here represented, the brace j' terminates at the upper end in a hook or bend. f2, in which a wedge, h, may be inserted for forcing the movable upright g toward the fixed upright e,- but in lieu of such Wedge a screw or other means might be employed.

If desired, the longitudinally extending portions of the fence might consist simply of wires, and the uprights ofthe post be notched to receive them.

By my invention I provide a portable felice which may be very readily erected or taken down for removal, and hence one which can be moved from place to place at a small expense.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

.1. A portable fence-post composed of a horizontally-extending base-piece, d, a xed upright, e, an iron brace, j', extending from said base-piece to said upright, a movable npright, g, and means acting on said movable upright to cause it to securely hold and clamp between it and the fixed ,upright the longitudinally-extending portions of the fence, substantially as speciiied.

2. The portable fence-post composed of the base d, the iixed upright e, the pivoted movable upright g, and the brace f, to which the fixed upright is secured, and' which is provided at the end with a loop or hook, f2, and the wedge h, adapted to be inserted in the said loop or hook, substantially as specified.
