20 Claims. (01. 30196) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in detachable and adjustable plates for hair clippers. 1
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a hair clipper characterized by a comb blade detachably mounted in position and supporting a cutter blade adjacent thereto to slide laterally thereof and arranged in a manner to be continuously oscillated for clipping the hair. The construction permits easy removal of the blades and associated parts for cleaning and sterilization.
Still further the invention proposes the provision of means easily removable with the blades for shifting the cutter blade to Various longitudinally adjusted positions with relation to the comb blade in a manner to adjust the clipper to control the length of the stub of hair remaining when the clipper is used.
A further object ofthe invention is the provision of a slide mounted on the comb blade and arranged to move longitudinally of the comb blade and provided at its front edge with a downwardly extending edge portion which engages a laterally extended groove formed in the cutter blade or shoulder, or abutment for permitting the cutter blade to be oscillated in all of thelongitudinal adjusted positions of the slide.
A further object proposes the provision of a slidably mountedhandle device exteriorly of the clipper for controlling the longitudinal movement of the slide and arranged to be releasably connected with theblades as a unit.
Astill further object of the invention is the provision of means for holding the handle device securely in various adjusted positions for firmly holding the cutter blade and for preventout of adjustment. I
An important object of the invention proposes the construction of a clipper having its comb blade and cutter blade and associated parts supported on the clipper body in such a manner that the two blades and said parts may be conveniently removed as a unit to permit the entire removed device to be conveniently sterilized or to permit the cutter bladeto be interchanged with cutter blades having different sized teeth.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure::

Fig. 25 is a perspective view of the channel clipper body l0 having an oscillatory driver member H. In the drawings the clipper is illustrated as being electrically driven. However, this is merely for the purpose of illustration, and the device may be equally well applied to a manually operable clipper, or to a clipper having any other desired type of drive mechanism. On the drawings, the body In is characterized by a casing |2 enclosing an electric motor, not shown on the drawings, with the oscillatory member H extending from the front end thereof (as shown in 8). The cover 23 is formed of sheet material and is provided with a pair of openings 24 through which screws 25 freely pass. The
Means is provided for holding the plate 25' in a positionin which the latch element 28 will maintain its operative position with relation to the arm This means comprises a leaf sprin 29 having one of its ends securely attached to the rear edge of the latch element 23 and the other of its ends bent to engage the free top edge of the cover 23 and hold the plate 26 against being moved, see Fig. 5. A handle 30 is mounted on the leaf spring 29 and extends through an opening formed in the plate 25' permitting the spring 29 to be flexed to disengage its free end from the adjacent edge over the cover plate 23 permitting the plate 25 to be moved forwards, moving the latch element 28 to an inoperative position to free the bracket H.
A cutter blade 3| having teeth 32 formed on its front edge rests upon'the top face of the comb blade I6 and projects from the front edge of The rear edge of the comb blade 3| is provided with a cutout 33 into which the oscillatory drive member extends for causin the cutter blade 3| to be oscillated laterally relative to the comb blade IS.
A slide 34' is arranged for guiding the cutter blade 3| and for moving the cutter blade longitudinally relative to the comb blade |6 for controlling the length of the stub of hair remaining upon the head. This slide 34 is substantially U-shaped in plan view and has its arms straddling the bracket IT. The front edge of the slide 34 is raised upwards to extend along the top face of the cutter blade 3|. The front edge 35 of the slide 34 is bent to extend vertically downwards and engage a groove 36 formed in the top face of the cutter blade 3| for laterally slidably supporting the cutter blade 3| to be oscillable. The groove 36 is formed by providing the cutter blade 3| with spaced upwardly extended ribs 31 between which the front edge 35 of the slide 34 engages;
A member 38 is provided for supporting the slide 34 and for limiting its movement to the longitudinal. This slide supporting member 33 is preferably constructed of resilient spring material. and has its rear portion secured in position upon the top face of the intermediate arm of the bracket IT. This rear portion of the slide supporting member 38 is secured in position by the screws l8 which secure the bracket I! in position upon the comb blade I6. At its sides, the rear portion of the slide supporting member 38 is provided with downwardly extending lugs 39 which extend along opposite sides of the slid 34. The front portion of the slide supporting member 38 continues into upwardly projected finers 40 which rest on the sides of the intermediate arm of the slide 34 and which act to press the free front of the slide 34 downwards to maintain its front edge 35 in position within the groove 36.. The side edges of the fingers 4B are also provided with downwardly extending lugs 4| which engage the sides of the slide 34 for limiting its movement to the longitudinal.
Means is provided upon the casing I2 of the clipper body H! for moving the slide 34 longitudinally of the comb blade Hi to similarly move the cutter blade 3|. This means comprises a control handle 42 formed of separate sections 42 and 42 The section 42 is provided with a threaded stud 43 which engages a threaded opening in the adjacent end of the section 42 The handle 42 is slidably supported in a bracket 44 attached on the casing l2 by means of rivets 45. The bracket 44 has a hook portion 44 which engages about an intermediate portion of the handle 42. The handle 42 adjacent its rear end is provided with a pointed member 46 which is selectively set screw 48 from the groove 49, and this permits the handle to be disengaged from the hook portion 44*. The free end of the section 42 of the handle pivotally connects with a link 50 which extends downwards into the cover 23 and which freely engages into an opening formed in one of the arms of the slide 34. A rod 52 extends from the link 59 and is rotatively supported in a bearing 53 mounted on the plate 29.
This rod 52 has its free end 52 bent downwards and freely engaging into an opening 54 formed in the other arm of the slide 34. Thus" after the handle 42 is moved longitudinally of the casing l2 it will cause the rod 52 to pivot about the bearing 53 and move the slide 34 longitudinally of the comb blade Hi and similarly move the cutter blade 3|.
In Fig. 24 a V-shape portion 48 is formed integral with the handle 42 and is adapted to engage the longitudinal groove 49. In this form of the invention, the V-shape portion is substituted in place of the said screw 48.
In Fig. 1'7 a cutter blade 3| is shown which has shallower teeth 32' than the teeth of the cutter blade shown in Fig. 13. In other respects this'cutter blade 3| is similar in construction to the cutter blade shown in Fig. 13 and is adapted; to be interchanged with the previous cutter blade for controlling the length of the hair remaining on the persons head.
In Figs. 13 and 19 details of a slide for the blade shown in Fig. 1'7, is shown. This slide 34' is similar to the slide shown in Fig. 15, distinguishing in the fact that the front edge 35. if
is turned outwards. Ihe cutter blade 3| is provided with a relatively broad rib 31 which is adapted to slidably engage in the front portion of the slide 34', as schematically illustrated in Fig. 19. In other respects these parts are the same asthe corresponding prior parts, and like portions thereof may be recognized by identical reference numerals.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The plug I4 is engaged into a conventional 2' electric outlet socket and the switch I5 is moved to an on position to energize the motor contained within the casing H to drive the oscil latory drive member H to correspondingly oscillate the cutter blade 3| laterally relative to the comb blade I6.
If in using the clipper it is found that the device is leaving the hair on the head shorter than it is desired the position of the cutter blade 3| may be adjusted with relation to the comb blade Iii in the following manner. The handle 42 is pushed forwards causing the member 46 to ride over the serrations 4! and pivot the rod 52. This causes the ends of the link 53 and the end '52 of the rod to move rearwards and correspondingly move the slide 34. Since the front portion of the slide 34 connects with the cutter blade 3| it will pull the cutter blade rearwards in a longitudinal direction relative to the comb blade l6 and space the teeth 32 of the blade 3| rearwards ofthe teeth of'the comb blade I6.
It is also possible to remove the comb blade I6 and cutter blade 3| from the casing l2 together with its other attached parts, as shown in Fig. 26,
for permitting this unit to be conveniently sterilized and permitting the cutter blade 3| to be interchanged with other cutter blades. To accomplish this the handle 30 is moved forwards disengaging the end of the spring 29 from the free back edge of the cover 23 permitting the latch 2 0 to be moved forwards to disengage the latch member 28 from the upwardly extended arm of the bracket IT. This frees the bracket IT. The comb blade l6 and the parts carried by said comb blade may now be pivoted downwards until the rearportion ll of the bracket strikes the inclined track I9. This downward pivoting of the parts disengaged the bottom of the link 59 and the bottom end 52 of the rod 52 from the apertures 5| and 54 in the slide 34. The comb blade I6 and the parts carried by it may now be pulled forwards and completely disengaged from the remaining portion of the clipper.
In the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 2'7 and 28 a clipper is shown for use upon animals which is similar to that illustrated in the previous form of the invention except for a slightly different means for moving the cutter blade 3| longitudinally relative to the comb blade It. In this form of the invention the link 50' is fixedly attached to and extends upwards from the slide 34" and is provided at its top end with a knob 69 for moving it and the rod 52 and end 52 to move the slide 34". The casing l2 of the clipper body ID in this form of the invention is provided with serrations 6| adjacent an intermediate portion of the link 50' and acts to hold the link 59' against accidental movement. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form. i
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein'disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a hair clipper having a body with a projecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably' mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various longitudinally adjusted positions on said comb blade.
2. In a hair clipper having a body with a projecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various longitudinally adjusted positions on'said comb blade, said detachable mounting of; said comb blade. comprising an irregularly formed U-shaped bracket having its intermediate arm secured upon said comb blade, said irregularly formed U- shaped bracket having one of. its armsengaging a slide mounted on said body and its other arm extending along the end of said body.
3. In a hair clipper having a body with a projecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive. member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various longitudinally adjusted positions on said comb blade, said detachable mounting of said comb blade comprising an irregularly formed U-shaped bracket having its intermediate arm secured upon said comb blade, said irregularly formed U- shaped bracket having'one of its arms engaging a slide mounted on said body and its other arm extending along the'end of said'body, said latch comprising a covering engaging the top face of said comb blade, a plate slidably mounted on said cover and having an intermediate portion depending through an opening formed in said cover, a latch member continuing from said intermediate portion and engaging the top free edge of the second-mentioned arm of said irregularly formed U-shaped bracket.
4. In a hair clipper having a body with a projecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various longitudinally adjusted positions on said comb blade, said detachable mounting of said comb blade comprising an irregularly formed U-shaped bracket having its intermediate arm secured upon said comb blade, said irregularly formed .U- shaped bracket having one of its arms engaging a slide mounted on said body and its other arm extending along the'end of said body, said latch comprising a covering engaging the top face of said comb blade, a plate slidably mounted on said cover and having an intermediate portion depending through an opening formed in said cover, a latch member continuing from said intermediate portion and engaging the top free edge of the second-mentioned arm of said irregularly formed U-shaped bracket, and means for retaining said latch in a position in which its latch member will operatively engage said bracket.
5. In a hair clipper having a body with a projecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various longitudinally adjusted positions on said comb blade, and said first mentioned means comprising a slide slidably supported on said comb blade and having its front edge overlaying and being bent downwards to engage a groove formed in the top face of said cutter blade.
6. In a hair clipper having a body with a pro jecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various longitudinally adjusted positions on said comb blade, and said first mentioned means comprising a slide slidably supported on said comb blade and having its front edge overlaying and being bent downwards to engage a groove formed in the top face of said cutter blade, said groove being formed by providing said cutter blade with spaced upwardly extended parallel bosses between which the front edge of said slide is disposed.
7. In a hair clipper having a body with a projecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various longitudinally adjusted positions on said comb blade, and said first mentioned means comprising a slide slidably supported on said comb blade and having its front edge overlaying and being bent downwards to engage a groove formed in the top face of said cutter blade, said latter mentioned means comprising a handle longitudinally movably mounted on said body, a link extending from one end of said handle, a rod extending from said link and pivotally supported and said link and rod having its free ends engaging complementary openings formed in said slide for moving said slide longitudinally as said handle is moved longitudinally.
8. In a hair clipper having a body with a projecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various longitudinally adjusted positions on said comb blade, and said first mentioned means comprising a slide slidably supported on said comb blade and having its front edge overlaying and being bent downwards to engage a groove formed in the top face of said cutter blade, said latter mentioned means comprising a handle longitudinally movably mounted on said body, a link extending from one end of said handle, a rod extending from said link and pivotally supported and said link and rod having its free ends engaging complementary openings formed in said slide for moving said slide longitudinally as said han-, dle is moved longitudinally, and means for holding said handle in various adjusted positions.
9. In a hair clipper having a body with a projecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various lon gitudinally adjusted positions on said comb blade, said cutter blade being interchangeable with other cutter blades having teeth of different sizes.
10. In a hair clipper having a body with a projecting oscillatory drive member, a comb blade detachably mounted on said body, a latch for latching said comb blade on said body, a cutter blade adjacent said comb blade and having a rear opening into which said oscillatory drive member engages, means mounted on said comb blade for slidably holding said cutter blade to oscillate laterally under the operation of said oscillatory drive member, and means mounted on said comb blade for holding said cutter blade in various longitudinally adjusted positions on said comb blade, and an upwardly extending link provided with a knob at its free top end for shifting the position of said latter means.
11. In a hair clipper, a comb blade, a bracket fixedly mounted on the comb blade and having a rearwardly extending portion, and a support plate for attachment on the body of the hair clipper and having an inclined track for receiving the rear portion of said bracket, and a latch for engaging the front portion of said bracket and releasably holding it in position.
12. In a hair clipper, a support plate and an inclined track mounted on the body of the clipper, a comb blade, a bracket mounted on the comb blade and having a rear portion engaging said inclined track in a way so that the comb blade may pivot upwards and downwards, a latch normally engaging said bracket for holding the comb blade from pivoting, a cutter blade mounted on said comb blade, a slide mounted on the comb blade for holding the cutter blade in various longitudinal positions, a handle on the body of the cutter and connected with a link extending downwards through an aperture in said slide, whereby when the comb blade is pivoted downwards said link will be withdrawn from said aperture.
13. In a hair clipper, a support plate and an inclined track mounted on the body of the clipper, a comb blade, a bracket mounted on the comb blade and having a rear portion engaging said inclined track in a way so that the comb blade may pivot upwards and downwards, a latch normally engaging said bracket for holding the comb blade from pivoting, a cutter blade mounted on said comb blade, a slide mounted on the comb blade for holding the cutter blade in various longitudinal positions, a handle on the body of the cutter and connected wtih a link extending downwards through an aperture in said slide,
whereby when the comb blade is pivoted downwards said link will be withdrawn from said aperture, said support plate having said lugs for engaging the side of said bracket to hold said bracket from lateral movement.
14. In a hair clipper having a pair of superimposed cutter blades and means for oscillating the top blade laterally relative to the lower one, a slide for holding the top blade in position on the lower one and movable longitudinally of said lower blade to similarly move said upper blade while oscillating laterally, comprising a substantially U-shaped member having its arms directed rearwards and slidably mounted on the rear portion-of said lower blade, said member having its front end bent'to overlap the rear edge of said top'blade, means for moving said memberlongitudinally of said lower blade, and means for connecting said member to said top blade to prevent relative longitudinal movement while leavlower one and movable longitudinally of Isaid lower blade to similarly move said upper blade while oscillating laterally, comprising a substantially U-shaped member having its arms directed rearwards and slidably mounted on the rear portion of said lower blade, said member having its front end bent to overlap the rear edge of said top blade, means for moving said member longitudinally of said lower blade, and means for connecting said member to said top blade to prevent relative longitudinal movement while leaving said top blade free to oscillate laterally, said member having its front edge bent downwards and engaging a laterally extending groove formed in the top face of said top blade and comprising the means for connecting said member to said top blade.
16. In a hair clipper having a pair of superimposed cutter blades and means for oscillating the top blade laterally relative to the lower one, a slide for holding the top blade in position on the lower one and movable longitudinally of said lower blade to similarly move said upper blade While oscillating laterally, comprising a substantially U-shaped member having its arms directed rearwards and slidably mounted on the rear portion of said lower blade, said member having its front end bent to overlap the rear edge of said top blade, means for moving said member longitudinally of said lower blade, and means for connecting said member to said top blade to prevent relative longitudinal movement while leaving said top blade free to oscillate laterally, said member having its front edge bent to engage around an upwardly extending laterally projected rib formed on the top face of said top blade and comprising the means for connecting saidmember to said top blade.

A hair clipper, comprising a comb blade, a cutter blade mounted on said comb blade to slide laterally and longitudinally of said comb blade, a handle-like casing having said comb blade and cutter blade mounted as a unit upon its bottom end and enclosing a drive means for moving said cutter blade laterally of said comb blade, and a member mounted on said handlelike casing and connected with said cutter blade for moving said cutter blade longitudinally of said comb blade.
18. A hair clipper, comprising a comb blade, a cutter blade mounted on said comb blade to slide laterally and longitudinally of said comb blade, a handle-like casing having said comb blade and cutter blade mounted as a unit upon its bottom end and enclosing a drive means for moving said cutter blade laterally of said comb blade, and a member mounted on said handle-like casing and connected with said cutter blade for moving said cutter blade longitudinally of said comb blade, said member being operable to move said cutter blade longitudinally of said comb blade while said cutter blade is continually moved laterally of said comb blade by said drive means.
19. A hair clipper, comprising a comb blade, a cutter blade mounted on said comb blade to slide laterally and longitudinally of said comb blade, a handle-like casing having said comb blade and cutter blade mounted as a unit upon its bottom end and enclosing a drive means for moving said cutter blade laterally of said comb blade, and a member mounted on said handlelike casing and connected with said cutter blade for moving said cutter blade longitudinally of said comb blade, said cutter blade being removable from said comb blade and replaceable thereon by being moved laterally of said comb blade in drive'means. v 1
20. A hair clipper, comprising a comb blade, a cutter blade mounted on said comb blade to slide laterally and longitudinally of said comb blade, 2. handle like' casing having said comb blade and cutter blade mounted as a unit upon its bottom end and enclosing a drive means for moving said cutter blade laterally of said comb blade, and a member mounted on said handlelike casing and connected with said cutter blade for moving said cutter blade longitudinally of said comb blade, said comb blade being mounted on said casing and comprising the mounting of said comb blade and cutter blade upon said casing, and said member being mounted on said comb blade to retain said cutter blade in operative position on said comb blade when said comb blade is removed from said handle-like casing.
