EYE-SHADE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,556, dated July 27, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM LANCASTER, of Santa Rosa, county of Sonoma, and State of California, have invented an Improved Eye- Shade; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to an improved shade to be used to protect the eyes from strong front, side, or cross lights; and it consists in the employment of suitably-shaped curved or plain shades with elastic or other supporting attachments by which the shade may be supported and adjusted upon the head with reference to the eyes and the light, as will be more fully described by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows side shades with removable top and front and elastic holding-frame. When only one of the pieces A is to be used it may be supported by a single spring, the shade being secured to one end, while the other end passes around the head sufficiently far to hold the shade wherever desired.

In some cases it may be found better to employ a pen or pencil, 0, having an elastic clasp, D, fitted to it, and adapted to receive and hold the edge of the card or shade, as shown. The pencil may be placed over the ear in the usual manner, and will thus support the shade at the side of the face, so as to. protect the eye.

The elastic spring B is passed through or connected with the side shades, A, so as to leave a space or slot, into which the ends of the curved top shade, E, may be inserted.

This shade is made detachable, and when in use forms an arch over the eyes. By this construction I am enabled to provide an adjustable shade which may be adapted to suit any light.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The side shades, A, with thesupportin g and adjusting spring B, in combination with the detachable curved top shade, E, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
