This invention .relates to an attachment for adhesive tape holders, and has for the primary object' the provision of a cutter which may be easily installed on a holder of the character specified during the manufacture thereof without unduly altering its construction and which may be employed at any time desired for severing the tape into selected lengths as removed from the holder and is of a construction that will permit the tape to be cut so that the end of the unused tape may remain flatly adhered to the roll of tape or with its free end disposed angularly and free therefrom to permit said end to be easily grasped for facilitating further removal of the tape from the holder.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation partly broken away and in section illustrating a holder for adhesive tape or similar material in roll form and equipped with an attachment constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View showing the attachment on the holder.

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the attachment in one of its positions for the severance of the tape or like material.

Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating the attachment.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a holder of a conventional construction employed to accommodate adhesive tape or similar material in roll form and to permit it to be dispensed by unwinding therefrom when desired. The holder 5 includes the usual drum 6 on which the roll of tape is journaled and the side flanges I acting as protectors for the roll of tape and for retaining the roll of tape on the drum.

When removing tape from the holder of the character described it is customary practice to employ scissors or other cutting medium separate from the holder to cut the tape into lengths desired. As this means of cutting the tape has disadvantages such as the loss or misplacement of the cutting medium and also permits the use of cutting mediums which may not be totally sanitary.

Through the use of the present invention, which forms a permanent part-of the holder and may be easily applied thereto during the manufacture of said holder, will permit the user to readily sever a desired length of tape from the roll after being unwound therefrom and consists of a blade 8 having a slight curvature thereto extending from end to end. The blade adjacent one end is provided with oppositely arranged ears or pintles 9 to be rotatably received within opposed openings Hl formed in the flanges I thereby pivotally connecting the blade for operation on the tape between the side flanges and also to permit the blade to have its position reversed, as shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the ofiicial drawing.

One end portion ofthe blade 8 is bent at right angles, as shown at [0, and sharpened to form a cutting edge II. The other end of the blade 8 is sharpened to form a cutting edge I2 lying in a plane with the plane of the blade and located adjacent the pintles 9.

The cutting blade may be employed for severing the tape after being unwound from th roll and holder into a selected length, as shown in Figure 1, or the blade may be positioned as shown in Figure 3 for cutting the tape into a selected length. When the blade is employed for cutting, as shown in Figure 1, the tape on being severed thereby leaves the end of the tape flatly adhered to the roll of tape, preventing said end from becoming mutilated, soiled or otherwise damaged. When the tape is severed by the blade in the position as shown in Figure 3 an angularly disposed end is left on the tape so that it may be readily grasped for pulling another length of tape from the holder. This is desirable when a person wishes to obtain a number of lengths of tape from the holder, while it is preferable to employ the blade in the position as shown in Figure 1 when it is only desired to remove a single length of tape from the holder.

When the blade is employed as shown in Figure 1, the cutting edge ll is held against the roll of tape by pressure placed on the blade so that when the cutting operation has been completed on the tape the end will adhere to the roll of tape. However, when the blade is used as shown in Figure 3, the cutting edge 12 is disposed a distance away from the outer convolution of the roll of tape and when the tape is severed thereby an end portion is provided on the tape remaining on the roll disposed at right angles from the outer run of the tape so that said end portion may be easily grasped.

It will be seen that through the use of this attachment an eificient cutting medium has been provided and one which will always be a part of the holder and readily accessible for use. Furthermore, an attachment of this kind will not materially increase the cost in the manufacture of the holder nor increase the sales price of the device in entirety.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: i V

1. In an attachment for holders for wound tape, a blade having two cutting edges, means between said edges for pivotally connecting the blade to a. holder whereby either cutting edge may be brought into position for severing the tape after a portion thereof has been withdrawn from the holder, one of said cutting edges bein disposed laterally of the major portion of the blade and the other cutting edge lying in a plane with the plane of the blade and located adjacent to said means.

In an attachment for holders for wound tape, a blade having two cutting edges, means between said edges for pivotally connecting the blade to a holder whereby either cutting edge may be brought into position for severing the tape after a portion thereof has been withdrawn from the holder, one of said cutting edges being disposed laterally of the major portion of the blade and the other cutting edge lying in a plane with the plane of the blade and located adjacent to said means, said blade having a curvature extending from end to end whereby one of the cutting edges may be brought into contact with the roll of tape on the holder and whereby the other cutting edge may be brought into cutting position spaced from the roll of tape on the holder.
