GUIDE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,760, dated July 6, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANN FRIEDRICH SGHROEDER, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Guide for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore the edge-seams ofarticles of clothing have been formed by first smoothing the seam after being lapped down and then basting them, after which they are stitched with the machine.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved attachment for sewing-machines which will fold down the seam immediately in front of the needle, so that the basting and ironing will not be required, and the seam can be made in one operation after the two pieces of cloth are united. The features of invention by which this object is accomplished will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved sewing-machine attachment, showing it as used for narrow seams. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a plan view, showing the attachment used for wide seams. Fig. 5 is a detail section, showing how the needle passes through the cloth. Fig. 6 is a detail section and plan view, showing how tge needle passes through the cloth at the front 6 go.

I l The plate A is provided with a central longitudinal slot, B, through which the screw 0 passes, and with two additional shorter longitudinal slots, D D, into which the studs E E at the ends of a steel spring-plate, F, resting on the plate A, pass. The steel'spring-plate F is provided with an aperture, through which the screw 0 passes. pointed and twisted axially, so as to have an inclined edge for pressing the cloth under the needle, the end Gr having a sharper point and beingadapted for thin cloth and narrow seams, Whereas the end H has broader and flatter projections.
The plate Ais held onto a gage, J, provided The ends of the plate A arewith a longitudinal slot in the rear part by the screw (J, which passes into the bed-plate K of the sewing-machine and holds all the parts together. The gage J is provided with a rightangled projection having a beveled flange, L, against which the edge of the cloth rests. At the end of this flange L a small shoulder is formed by making the vertical recess If.
The upper edge of the flange L is provided with a notch, N, in which the end of the plate A is held The attachment is used as follows: Having been secured on the bed-plate K of the sewing-machine, it is adjusted in such a position as the desired seam may require. If a broad seam is desired, the flange L must be farther away from the needle than in case a narrow one is desired. The two pieces of elothare first stitched to each other by hand or machine in. the ordinary manner, and are then folded so that their rear sides face each other.
The cloth is then placed onto the bed-plate K with the inner side of the article of clothing upward, the edge resting against the guideflange L. The twisted point at the end G of the plate A presses onto the rounded edge of the upper cloth, 0, and presses it in the direction of the arrow (1. as it passes under said hook, as shown in Fig. 5, and before it can resume its former position the needle passes through it and sews the pieces together, as shown in Fig. 6. Now, if thicker cloth is used and a broad seam is desired, the screw 0 is loosened, the studs E of the spring F are taken out of the slots D D, and the spring-plate is rotated one hundred and eighty degrees in the plane of the plate A, and then the studs E E are snapped into the slots again. The plate A is then rotated one hundred and eighty degrees, so that the end H of the plate A rests in the notch N. This end H, which is also twisted and pointed, pushes the edge of the upper cloth, 0, back a much greater distance than the end G, and the seam will be much wider.
To give the seam a complete finish its extreme outside edgethat is, the extreme outside edge of the lower cloth-must be stitched, as shown in Fig. 6. To accomplish this the flange L is placed at an angle against the edge of the seam, and in such amanner that the Too recess M is directly under the needle. The edge of the seam is pressed against the end of the flange L with suflicient force to present surface enough under the needle-point for the same to pass into the cloth.
With the above-described apparatus a very fine and elegant seam can be made, all the la bor of basting is avoided, the seam need not be smoothed as much as the ordinary seam, and yet presents a much better appearance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sewing-machine attachment made substantially as herein shown and described, consistin got a slotted plate havin g its ends pointed and twisted axially, a spring-plate on the said plate, a gage upon which the plate rests, and a screw for holding these parts together and on the bed-plate of the sewing-machine, as set forth.
2. The reversible plate A, having the axially-twisted, sharply-pointed end G, for thin cloth and narrow seams, and the axially twisted end H, having broad, flat projections, for broad seams and thick cloth, as described.
3. In asewing-maehine attachment, the gage J, constructed, substantially as herein shown and described, with a beveled flange, L, having a vertical recess, M, at the end, as set forth.
4. In a sewing-machine attachment, the combination, with the gage J, of the plate A, provided with pointed and axially-twisted ends, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a sewing-machine attachment, the com bination, with the plate A, having pointed and axially-twisted ends, of the spring-plate F and the gage J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
