W. H. STICHTER. Dust-Pan.
No. 228,692. Patented June 8,1880.
N.PETER$. PMOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHKNGYON. n, C.
UNITED STATES WALTER H. STIGHTER, OF POTTSVILLE, PENN SYLVANIA.
PATENT OFFICE...
DUST-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,692, dated June 8, 1880,
Application filed May 8, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. STIQHTER, of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Dust-Pan, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to household articles or utensils used for taking up, holding, or carrying away dust or sweepings.
The Object of my invention is to provide a dust-pan in which dust or sweepings may be brushed or swept and confined so that the contents of the pan may be removed without any liability of spilling or scattering them, and I attain my object in the manner hereinafter set forth.
My invention differs from articles used for similar purposes now known and used, in that I provide a dustreceptacle in the back of the pan, which has a sliding cover which effectually prevents the escape of the dust, dirt, or sweepings contained therein.
In the drawings attached hereto, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a section through the line a; 00.
F A is the body of the pan, and is formed of a sheet or connected sheets of thin metal, and shaped at the back into circular form, forming about two-thirds or three-fourths of a circle. To this body are attached the sides E E E E.
B is a slot in A, in which the stem of the knob O slides.
G is a slide of circular form, fitting between the sides E E, having the knob 0 attached, and forms the cover for the opening formed between the sides and the receptacle A, which is (No model.)
formed by bending the body F into circular form at the back. D is a handle secured to the dust-pan.
e e is a bead formed in the circular portion of the sides E, or it may be a narrow strip of sheet metal secured to the sides, and serves the purpose of a hearing or guide for the sliding cover G. H is a bead formed on the end of the sheet F.
It will be readily seen from the drawings that the dust is brushed upward and then descending slightly in the receptacle over F, and when the cover G is pushed down, as shown in Fig. 2, all the dust is secured in the receptacle, and the dust-pan may be freely handled without danger of spilling the contents.
The knob O, secured to G and moving in the slot B, is used to open or close the opening in the receptacle A.
The dust-pan may be strengthened or ornamented in any desired manner, and may be constructed of any material answering the requirements of the above description.
What 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved dust-pan, substantially as herein described, consisting of the body F, one end forming the receptacle A, the slot B, sliding cover G, knob 0, sides E E E E having beads or strips 6 e, which form bear ings or guides for the cover G, and the handle D, all combined and constructed as and for the purposes shown and set forth.
WALTER H. STIOHTEE.
