Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD 0. SMITH AND LEROY S. WINTERS, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
CARPEI-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,689, dated June 8, 1880. Application filed December 31, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD 0. SMITH and LEROY S. WINTERS, of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Carpet- Stretcher; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Our invention relates to a hand-implement of simple construction, for use in stretching carpets and holding any desired portion of the edge thereof while being nailed to the floor.
1n accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a perspective view, of the implement.
The implement consists of the bar or handle A, a spike or dog, B, and toothed metal plate 0. The latter is provided with an annular head or socket, D, in which one end of the handle A is inserted and properly secured, while the spike B is similarly attached to the other end of the handle, as shown.
To use the implement, the bar A is firmly,
grasped and the teeth of blade 0 set in the carpet near its edge and then, by holding the handle A horizontal and pushing toward the wall of the room a portion of the carpet-edge is brought close up to the mop-board, when the spike B is pressed down, and thus caused to pass through the carpet and enter the floor so as to hold the implement fixed in position, which will, in turn, hold the carpet-edge immovable, so that it may be conveniently nailed to the floor. This having been done, the implement is then raised and applied to another blade forward or backward from the end of the handle. The forward inclination is preferable or requisite in most cases, since the teeth of blade G will then take a better hold in the carpet.
The device is very simple and inexpensive in construction and efiicient in use.
WVe are aware that a earpet-stretcher has been constructed of a horizontal plate provided with bristles or flexible teeth and a rigid handle and a hinged claw. Such device we disclaim.
What we claim is- The improved carpet-stretcher formed of the rigid bar or handle A and the toothed plate 0 and dog B, having sockets, as specified, and rigidly attached to the respective ends of said bar, as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing improvements in carpet-stretehers, as above described, we have hereunto set our hands this 30th day of August, 1879.
EDWARD 0. SMITH. LEROY S. WINTERS.
