llivrTnn STATES PATENT Ormea VILLIAM RANDALL AND FRANCIS R. TUTTLE, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
STEAM J ET-PU IVI P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,275, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed April 9, 1880.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM RANDALL and FRANCIS R. TUTTLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Jet-Pumps; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap-V pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or `figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in steam jet-pumps for the purpose of throwing a steady and powerful stream of water to eX- tinguish lires, as well as for other purposes where a steam jet-pu1np is of use; and this our invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the drawing hereunto annexed, which represents a central longitudinal section of our improved jetpump.
On the said drawing, a is the steam-suppl y pipe, with its valve b and adjustable plug c, to which is attached the central steam-delivery pipe, d, as shown.
c is a lateral perforation, as usual, through the valve-spindle c, to allow the steam from the supply-pipe to pass freely through the delivery-pipe d when the plug c is on its seat.
e is a pipe surrounding the steam-delivery pipe d, one of its ends being screwed to the valve b and its other end screwed into the left-hand end of the cross f, as shown in the drawing, when it may be adjustable in or out more or less, as may be desired, and when so adjusted it is to be secured in place by means of the check-nut f.
j" is a screw-threaded plug in the upper end of the cross f, which plug, when removed, allows for the introduction of a suitable cleaning tool or rod from above, so as to be able to clean out said cross and its extension below the connecting-pipe g, T-pipe h, and watersupply pipe h'. y
The right-hand end of the cross f is connected, by means of the screw-threaded pipe t', to the second cross, 7c, having a detachable screw-plug, la', in its upper end, in a similar (No model.)
manner and for a similar purpose as heretofore described in relation to the detachable plug f within the cross f.
l is a central delivery-pipe located within the connecting-pipe t', as shown, it being secured in place in its right-hand end by means of the bushing or collar Z.
mis a screw-threaded pipe connecting the righthand end of the cross k to the T-pipe n, the lower end of which serves as an overow, it being for this purpose provided with an overflow-pipe, a', as shown.
o is a central-delivery-pipe located within the connecting-pipem, it being secured in place by means of the bushing or collar o in its left hand end, as shown.
p is the delivery-pipe, securedwithin the outer end of the T-pipe u by means of bushing or collar p', as shown.
To the lower end of the cross 7c is attached the water-supply pipe q, that is connected with the regulating-valve r, having side passage, connected by means of horizontal pipe s to the T-pipe h, as shown.
It will thus be seen that the pump is provided with two separate water-supplies, one of which is provided with a regulating-valve, by which arrangement the capacity and power of the pump can be increased at will whenever so desired.
It will also be seen that, with the exception of its valves, the pump is entirely composed of ordinary screw-threaded pipes, Ts, and crosses, without the use of costly castings, and by the employment and arrangement of the detachable screw-plugs f k' the crosses f k and their supply-pipes may readily be cleaned whenever needed.
Steam, being admitted at a and forced through the pipe d, causes the water admitted to the suction-pipe h to be drawn up through it, the T-pipe h, pipes g and q to the central pipes, l and o, through which the liquid is conducted and forced out through the deliverypipe p in a very effective manner.
In case one supply only is required the pas sage q is to be shut off by closing the valve r.
What we wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is
1. Theherein-described steam j et-pump, con- IOO sisting of the valve b, internal pipes7 d I. op, the secondary inlet q s land its valve or eut-ott ro external pipes, e z' m g, the erossesfh7 und T- v", as und for the purpose set forth. pipe n, as and for the purpose set forth.
