My invention relates to comb pocket means for honey extractors and the principal object of this invention is to provide an improved comb pocket means for honey extractors over the comb pocket means of the joint application of myself and Cyril L. Morris filed in the United States Patent Office October 5, 1937, Serial No. 167,388, and the principal objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a comb pocket means for honey extractors which will reduce to a minimum the spray caused by the process of extracting the honey from the comb;
Second, to provide a means of this class in which the comb pocket is so constructed that the honey leaving the comb will be forced outwardly toward the outer side against the wall of the container;
Third, to provide a means of this class in which the side walls are shielded on both sides to prevent the honey from going into an adjacent comb pocket;
Fourth, to provide a means of this class which is adapted to provide means for the honey leaving the comb from being sprayed or affected by the air pressure by the revolution of the ex tractor;
Fifth, to provide a means of this class whereby the number of comb pockets may be increased to a maximum without interfering with each other;
Sixth, to provide a means of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, enicient in its action and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order;
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of one of my pocket means shown in connection with a fragmentary portion of the honey container showing portions broken away to facilitate the illustration; Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof taken from the outer side of the pocket member and omitting the container; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top or plan view of a portion of an extractor showing a plurality of my pockets in operative position in connection therewith on a reduced scale; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken from the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken from the line 5--5 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view taken from the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing:
The container I, comb pocket lower support 2, upper support 3, outer member 4, inner member 5, deflector members 6 and 1, screens 8 and 9, reinforcing rods Ill and H, upper end members 12 and I3 and lower end members I4 and I5 constitute the principal parts and portions of my honey extractor comb pocket means.
The container I is of any conventional type and is a hollow container open at its upper side and provided with a tapered bottom and an outlet for the extracted honey. My honey extractor comb pocket means are mounted therein with their outer sides pivotally mounted on supports 2 by means of small shafts 4a which are secured to the outer member 4 at its lower side and extend downwardly and are provided with a flange portion 41) adapted to rest on a lug member 2a extending from the lower support 2, which is an annular tubular member, as shown, but may be of any form desired; The pocket means is supported at its upper side by means of a lug 4c in which is mounted a shaft 4d which is secured in the upper support 3 by means of a nut threaded on the extended end of the member 4d. This upper support 3 is also an annular member which extends around inside of the container I and spaced slightly from the Wall thereof. These members 2 and 3 revolve for extracting the honey by centrifugal force from opposite sides of the comb in the pocket. This outer member 4 is channel shaped as shown best in Fig. 5 of the drawing and is provided with an inwardly turned portion ie at its upper end which tends to keep the extracted honey from raising from the pocket at the upper end when extracted. This member 4 is also provided with an inner turned portion 41 at its lower end which serves as a support for the lower end of the honeycomb frame. The shaft 4a extends through this extended portion t as shown best in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawing.
Secured to the opposite sides of the member 4 at its upper end and extending inwardly therefrom are the upper end members I2 and I3, shown best in Fig. 6 of the drawing. These members l2 and I3 are substantially angular in cross section composed of two spaced members between which the side portions of the member 4 extend, as shown best in Fig. 6 of the drawing. Secured to the lower end of the member 4 in a similar manner are a pair of lower end members I4 and I5 of similar structure, thus providing the upper and lower end support. Secured to the extended ends of these upper and lower supports I2 to [I5 inclusive is the inner member 5 which is also channel shaped as shown best in Fig. 5 of the drawing. These upper and lower end members are secured to the flanges 5a and 5?), thus supporting the inner member 5. This inner member 5 is also provided with an outwardly extending portion 50 at its lower end which serves as a support for the honeycomb frame at the lower side.
Secured to the member 5 at its inner side near its middle is the loop member M to which chains or other means are attached for shifting the comb pocket means to reversed position for extracting the honey from the opposite side, the chain being indicated as C, which is any conventional type and may be operated in any conventional manner.
Secured on the inner sides of the end members H. to l5 inclusive and the inner sides of the flanges of the outer and inner members 4 and 5 are screens 8 and 9 which form the main support for the side thrust of the honeycomb in the frame which permits the honey to flow through this screen.
Positioned on the outer side of the flanges of the members t and 5 and extending crosswise in spaced relation are a plurality of reinforcing rods l and l l which serve to reinforce the screen and prevent its giving outwardly when the pressure is brought to bear by the centrifugal action,
Secured to the outer surface of the member and over the end of the reinforcing rods [0 and H are the deflector members 6 and 1 which extend outwardly in diverging angular form as shown best in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawing and form deflectors for deflecting the extracted honey outwardly so that it is thrown against the wall of the container. These deflector members 6 and I are provided at their upper and lower ends with substantially right angular turned portions 6a and 6b and la and lb as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing, which are secured to the upper and lower end members l2 to IE inclusive, as shown best in Fig. 2, thus closing the upper and lower end so that the honey must pass outwardly to 'the outer edges of the members 6 and I when leaving the pocket means.
The operation of my honey extractor comb pocket means is substantially as follows:
The honeycomb frame is positioned in the upper end of the comb member inwardly of the backwardly turned portion ie and rests upon the members if and extending from the members 4 and 5 as shown best in Fig. 4, and with the extractor arranged so that the pocket members are positioned as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing the lower and upper supports 2 and 3 are revolved at a suitable speed and the honey is thrown outwardly through the screen 9, past the reinforcing rods Ill and Ill and forced outwardly along the inner walls of the deflector members 6 and 'I and against the inner walls of the container l. The upper and lower ends of the deflector members 6 and I being closed, the extracted honey must pass outwardly against the wall without spraying and without any loss of the honey. Then by movement of the chain C in the opposite direction, the members are reversed in their position and the extractor is again operated in the same manner with the same relar construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination with a revoluble support, of a pocket member constructed and arranged for a single comb only and pivoted at one side edge on said revoluble support and provided with foraminous side walls adjacent the opposite side walls of a single honeycomb placed therein and a deflector member with one side secured adjacent one of said foraminous side walls and its other side diverging outwardly of said foraminous side wall leaving considerable space at the outer side between said deflector and said foraminous side wall.
2. In a honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination with a revoluble support, of a pocket member constructed and arranged for a single comb only and pivoted at one side edge on said revoluble support and provided with foraminous side walls adjacent the opposite side walls of a single honeycomb placed therein and a deflector member with one side secured adjacent one of said foraminous side walls and its other side diverging outwardly of said foraminous side wall leaving considerable space at the outer side between said deflector and said foraminous side wall, the upper and lower ends of said deflector member closed and extending to said foraminous side Wall.
3. In a honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination of a pocket member arranged for a single comb with ioraminous side walls, a pair of deflector members in opposed relation outwardly of said foraminous walls, said deflector members being connected at their inner edges to the edges of said pocket member and diverging outwardly, closure members extending from the upper and lower ends of said deflector members to said foraminous side walls, a revoluble support means on the outer edge of said pocket for pivotally supporting said pocket on said revoluble support and means for shifting the inner edge of said pocket relatively to the outer edge and means for shifting the inner end of said pocket upon its pivotal mountings.
4. In a honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination of an outer channel member, an inner channel member, end members connecting said outer and inner channel members at their upper and lower ends on opposite sides, screens secured to the opposite sides of said channel members and on said end members, reinforcing bars extending transversely on the outer side of said screen members and secured to said outer and inner channel members at their opposite ends, and deflector members with their one edge secured to the inner channel member and their walls diverging outwardly leaving openings at the outer edges.
5. In a honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination of an outer channel member, an inner channel member, end members connecting said outer and inner channel members at their upper and lower ends on opposite sides, screens secured to the opposite sides of said channel members and on said end members, reinforcing bars extending transversely on the outer side of said screen members and secured to said outer and inner channel members at their opposite ends, deflector members with their one edge secured to the inner channel member and their walls diverging outwardly leaving openings at their outer edges, and means for closing the space between said screen members and said deflector members at the upper and lower ends.
6. In a honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination of an outer channel member, an inner channel member, end members connecting said outer and inner channel members at their upper and lower ends on opposite sides, screens secured to the opposite sides of said channel members and on said end members, reinforcing bars extending transversely on the outer side of said screen members and secured to said outer and inner channel members at their opposite ends, deflector members with their one edge secured to the inner channel member and their walls diverging outwardly leaving openings at the outer edges, means for closing the space between said screen members and said deflector members at the upper and lower ends, and means for pivotally supporting said outer channel member at its upper and lower ends.

In a honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination of an outer channel member, an inner channel member, end members connecting said outer and inner channel members at their upper and lower ends on opposite sides, screens secured to the opposite sides of said channel members and on said end members, reinforcing bars extending transversely on the outer side of said screen members and secured to said outer and inner channel members at their opposite ends, deflector members with their one edge secured to the inner channel member and their walls diverging outwardly leaving openings at the outer edges, means for closing the space between said screen members and said deflector members at the upper and lower ends, and honeycomb frame supports extending toward each other from the lower ends of said outer and inner channel members.
8. In a honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination of an outer channel member, an inner channel member, end members connecting said outer and inner channel members at their upper and lower ends on opposite sides, screens secured to the opposite sides of said channel members and on said end members, reinforcing bars extending transversely on the outer side of said screen members and secured to said outer and inner channel members at their opposite ends, deflector members with their one edge secured to the inner channel member and their walls diverging outwardly leaving openings at the outer edges, means for closing the space between said screen members and said deflector members at the upper and lower ends, honeycomb frame supports extending toward each other from the lower ends of said outer and inner channel members, and means on said inner channel member to facilitate the shifting of said comb pocket means upon its pivotal support.
9. In a honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination of an outer frame and supporting member, an inner frame member, end members connecting said outer and inner frame members at their upper and lower ends at opposite sides, screens secured to the opposite sides of said frame members and on said end members, and a pair of deflector members each having one edge secured to the inner frame member and spaced from said screen at its outer edge.
10. In a, honey extractor comb pocket means of the class described, the combination of an outer frame and, supporting member, an inner frame member, end members connecting said outer and inner frame members at their upper and lower ends at opposite sides, screens secured to the opposite sides of said frame members and on said end members, and deflector members with one edge secured to the frame member and their walls diverging outwardly leaving relatively wide spaces at their outer edges between said deflector members and said screens.
