Description

J. R. NELSON. Burial-Gasket.
No. 228,104. Patented May 25, 1880.
WITH 9/6 aJw y,
PEfERs. FHDTO-HTHOGRAPHFR, WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. NELSON, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
BU RlAL-CASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,104, dated May 25, 1880. Application filed June 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN R. NELSON, of Burlington, Des Moines county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Burial-Gaskets, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement consists in providing a peculiarly-shaped rim-piece of metal to fit over and bind the upper edge of the wooden body, and also to receive a closely-fitting soft-metal cover, andin securing an outer cover of wood to the body by means of screws passing through the edge of the cover into and through the web of the rim-piece.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the casket from top to bottom. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the casket with both covers in place.
The body A of the casket is formed of wood, with a metallic rim-piece, 0, formed of sheet metal, H-shaped, as described, and secured precisely as shown in the patent issued to me February 25, 1879, for an improvement in burial-caskets, No. 212,565, the securing-screws passing through the edge of the outer wooden cover, D. Type-metal, or a combination of tin, lead, bismuth, and antimony, or either of them, or similar metals, may compose the inner closely-fitting metal cover, B, turned down at the edge to forma tongue, I), which fits closely to the inner wall, 0. of the upper gutter in the rim-piece. This gutter of the rim-piece may then be filled with cement and the outer lid secured to the body in the usual Way.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a burial-casket, the double-guttered metal rim-piece O, fitting over the upper edge of the wooden body A, in combination with an inner soft-metal cover, B, having its edge I) fitting into the upper part of said rim-piece O, and on its inner wall, together with an outer cover, D, secured to A by screws, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN'R. NELSON.
