Patented Apr. 7, 1942 v i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MECHANICAL LOADER FOR RIVETIN G MACHINES Donald C. Draper, Jackson, Mich., assignor to Tomkins-Johnson Company, Jackson, Mich., a
corporation of Michigan Application October 24, 1938, Serial No. 236,657
15 Claims.
This invention relates to riveting machines and the like and more particularly to such a machine having a movable anvil.
In the application Serial No. 192,946, filed by Loyd A. Ward et al., February 28, 1938, was disclosed one form of mechanism for depositing'a hile it is out of cooperating relation with the set.
Another object of the invention is to provide a riveting machine or the like having a movable anvil laterally movable with respect to the set, rivet clamping jaws spaced laterally from the set and means for ejecting a rivet from between said jaws onto the anvil while it is out of cooperating relation with the set.
A further object of the invention is to provide a riveting machine or the like having a laterally movable anvil with the mechanism, the operation of which is timed by the movement of the anvil for depositing a rivet on the anvil and also for selecting a rivet from a source to be deposited on the anvil.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following specification when taken with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation partially broken away through the machine comprising my invention,
Fig. 2 is a section on the line IIII of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the drawings, the reference character I indicates a frame on which is mounted a laterally slidable anvil 2. Arranged above the anvil 2 in its extreme forward position, as shown in Fig. 1, is a set 3 mounted in a ram 4 arranged for vertical reciprocatory movement in a conventional manner.
The anvil 2 is secured in a base 5 by a screw 6, the base 5 being provided at its bottom with flanges 1, shown particularly in Fig. 2, for coacting with ways 8. The base 5 is connected to a piston rod 9 reciprocated by a piston (not shown) in a fluid cylinder H1. The specific connection between the piston rod 9 and the base 5 comprises an extension II from the piston rod 9 projecting through a restricted bore l2v in one end of the base 5 into an enlarged bore l3 within the base 5. Th extension has disposed thereabout a helical spring l4 hearing at one end against a head |5 on the extension H and at the other end against a shoulder l6 'within the base l5. Mounted in the frame I is a stop rod 20 arranged to abut against the rear end of the base 5 as it moves rearwarclly or to the right, as disclosed in Fig. 1.
Thus, as the piston rod 9 moves rearwarclly the base 5, carrying with it the anvil 2, is moved rearwardly until the base 5 abuts against the stop 20. The piston rod 9 is arranged to move slightly further to the rear so that the base 5 is resiliently urged against the stop 20 by the spring M. The use of the stop 20 assures that the anvil 2 will always be at a predetermined position at the end of its rearward movement.
Disposed directly above the anvil 2 in its rearward position are rivet clamping jaws 2| mounted on cantilever leaf'springs 22. The jaws 2| may be of the character disclosed in the copending application, SerLNo. 101,210, of Loyd A. Ward.
Communicating with the jaws 2| is a chute 23 having associated therewith a rivet selector 24.
The selector 24 is like that disclosed in the afore- Zsaid copending application of Ward et al., Ser. No. 192,946, and operates each time it is reciprocated 'a pin 32 and has a'depending arm 33 arranged beside the piston rod 9. Extending laterally from the arm 33 is a rod 34 having connected to the end thereof a helical spring 35, the free end of which is connected to a part of the frame I by a screw 36. The action of the spring 35 is to resiliently urge the bell crank lever 3| in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 1. s
The piston rod. 9 has adjustably connected thereto a collar 40,.which is in the path of movement' of thearm 33. Thus, as the piston rod 9 moves rearwarclly, the collar 40 engages the arm 33 to rock the arm 39 downwardly and with it the plunger 26. As the plungerZli is disposed directly above the jaws 2|,and the rivet or upsettable member held by-the jaws 2|, downward movement of the arm 30 forces the rivet or up- 2 settable member from the jaws 2| onto the anvil 2. Preferably, the anvil 2 is provided with a recess 4|, into which the tail piece of the par-- the rivet selector 24. Thus, as the bell crank lever 3| is rocked about its pivot 32, the selector 24 is reciprocated. The selector is arranged so that as the bell crank lever 31' pivots ing a clockwise direction, the selector 24 operates to a holding jaws spaced to one side of said set, a
reciprocating plunger for forcing a rivet out of said jaws onto said anvil, and an operating connection between said plunger and said anvil moving means.
'to feed a rivet into said jaws, means to transfer select a rivet from the chute 23 above the selec,- r
24 is dropping into the jaws2l, the plunger'ZB is moving upwardly from between the .jawsz'l;
The leaf spring 43 is connected to the rod 44 by nuts 45 threaded on the rod 44 so that the move- "ment of the selector 241may'be' properly-tuned with respect to the upward movement of th p1unger26. V ,7
In operation of the machine according to the present "invention, when the base 5"'moves' rearwardly and engages with the stop 2Q,toposition theanvil 2 with respectto-the jaws 2|, the collar 4ll'engages with the depending'arm33 to move the plunger 26 downwardly to force arivet from between the jawsflZl into the recess 4| in the anvil 2. Then, as the piston rod '9'moves for-- wardly to move theanvil 2 forwardl qthe release of pressure of the'collar4 9 against the arm 33 permits the spring 35 to operate to lift the arm 30 and thus the plunger 26. At the same time the selector-"24 is moved, through the cantilever "leaf spring 43, to release a rivetfand'drop it into position between the jaws'j2l. When the anvil '2 reaches its forward position having the rivet upstanding therein, work46 is disposed over the rivet and thesetl3 operated to upset the rivet over thework. i
While the inventionha's been. described as beingparticularly usable for a'rivfet having a dependingshank, it will be understood that it'may I be used for other types of 'rivets'or 'upsettable members or their equivalents. Also, the invention is 'not limited to the' specific form "of anvil shown. In the claims it is tob understood that the'rivet is intended to mean upsettable members in general and their equivalents. f
