This invention .relates to typographical composing machines suchas `are known underthe registered trade-mark Linotypeff wherein circulating matrices are releasedfrom a magazine in the order in which their characters are to appear in'print and assembledin line, the composed line transferred to the face of a mold, the

In particular, the invention relates to machines equipped with a, plurality of magazines which may contain different matrix fonts whichmagazines are movable columnwise that is `to say` upwardly and downwardly in the machine to bring,
one or other into operative relation to the assembling and distributing mechanisms, and are independently removable and replaceable. Such machines are hereinafter designated as machines of the kind referred to. To facilitate such removal and replacement it is usual to bring the magazine selected for removal into the operative position in relation to the assembler entrance and then to spread the magazines by raising those above the selected magazine so that the latter becomes accessible, after which the same is separated from its base frame and removed.y
The present invention is concerned with the means for spreading the magazines which has hitherto involved manual manipulation on the part of the operator to control the spreading in accordance with the adjustment kof the magazines, and provides a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to wherein the selection of the magazines to be spread'is controlled by the operation of the machine by or through the columnwise adjustment of the magazines. The mechanism whereby this is effected may consist of toggle links and lifting members lwhich are caused to engage in studs or other Suitable members on the magazines orV ony their base frames.

The sideframes between which the magazine column is adjustable, are provided with a pair of pivoted magazine-supporting arms, one at each side, the onefshown in the drawings beingdesignated 5 and ,being fixed to a shaft 6 mounted in the frame. The vshaft 6,- hereinafter termed the supporting arm shaft, is adapted to. connect operatively with arms l, 8, arranged to operate links Ia and 8a, which respectively effect the spread of 40, the magazines and the separation of the selected magazine from its base-frame. The arm 5 is shown in Figure-2in theextended position andV in the inoperative position in Figure 1.
In the embodiment described the spreading of the magazines is effected conveniently; by means of a pair of links 9, HJ forminga toggle at each side'of `the magazine column, the toggle being extended/and collapsed by rocking :a shaft Il extending across the base frame l2 of the lowest magazine. In the shaft H, hereinafter termed the toggle shaft, one link I0 of each pair is fastened, vthe other link 9 of each pair being pivotally connected to the base frame I3 of the uppermost magazine I..r There nare also Lprovided pairs of i liftingghooksiil 4; I ssuspended' from each sido of the uppermost base frame I3, arranged to be engaged as desired with studs extending laterally from the base frames I3a and |310 of the magazines 2 and 3. The said lifting hooks I4, I5 may be provided on one or both sides of the magazine frame and Where four magazines are employed two lifting hooks are disposed on one or both sides in the manner hereinafter described. The edges I6, I1 of the lifting hooks I4, I5 remote from the hook members I8, I9 are shaped as a cam surface and are adapted to engage with rollers 28 and 20a or the like by means of which they are guided into engagement with appropriate studs 2| 22 so that when the toggle links 9 and I0 are straightened the selected magazines are spread apart. It will be appreciated that it is not necessary to spread the magazines when the uppermost one is to be removed. When it is desired to remove the magazine immediately below the top one, the lifting hooks are not engaged with studs on the magazine frames but the straightening of the toggle links 9, I0 extending between the base frames I3 and I2 of the uppermost and that as the magazine column is adjusted the toggle shaft II is operatively connected with the grooved levers 25 in succession.
In order to separate the selected magazine from its base frame to facilitate removal of the magazine therefrom, the arm 8 operable by the lowermost magazines I and 4 raise the uppermost magazine I so that the magazine 2 is accessible. When it is desired to remove the third magazine 3 from the top the upper lifting hook I4 which is shorter than the lower one is engaged with a stud 2| on the base frame I3a of the second magazine 2 so that when the toggle linkage is straightened the uppermost magazine I and the second magazine 2 below it are raised leaving the third magazine 3 free to be withdrawn as shown in Figure 2. When it is desired to withdraw the lowest magazine 4 the lifting hooks I4 and I5 are engaged with the studs 2|, 22 on the second and third magazine base frames I3a, I3b respectively so that upon the toggle links 9 and I8 being straightened the three upper magazines I, 2 and 3 are raised and the lowest magazine 4 is free to be removed.
The rear edges I6, I1 and front edges I6, I1@L of the lifting hooks I4, I5 are suitably shaped and are arranged to engage with rollers 28, 20a which may be Xed to brackets 26, 21 which are secured on either side of the distributor bracket 23. The arrangement is such that the engagement of these rollers 20, 2lia with the hook edges I5, I6a, I1, ITE, automatically couples or uncouples the lifting hooks I4, I5 to or from the stud or studs 2|, 22 on the respective magazine base frame in the magazine removing position. In the arrangement shown the said bracket 26 is located above the bracket 21 and the edges of the lifting hooks are so shaped that engagement of the right hand rear edges I6, I1 thereof with the upper roller 28 serves to engage the hooks I8, I9 with the studs 2|, 22 on the base frames of magazines 2 and 3 and engagement of the left hand rear edges |621, I1a with the lower roller 28a serves to release the said hooks I8, I9 from the said studs 2|, 22.
It will be understood that the magazine which it is desired to remove is first brought into the operative position in relation to the assembling and distributing mechanism by adjustment of the magazine columnwise. The toggle shaft II is at one end formed with a tongue 23 adapted to engage in a groove 24 formed in one or another of a series of levers 25 which are connected with and simultaneously operated by the before-mentioned link 1a connected by arm 1 to the supporting arm shaft 6, the arrangement being such supporting arm shaft 6, is connected through link 8a with a shaft 29 which has a boss 38 connected thereto formed with a groove 3| adapted to engage with a tongue 32 on a transverse shaft 33 mounted on the base frame of each magazine. By these connections, when the supporting arm shaft 6 is rocked, the transverse shaft 33 on the base frame of the selected magazine is also rocked to operate in known manner a lifting member 34 for raising the respective magazine from the base frame.
The arms 1, 8 which actuate the spreading and separating mechanisms are guided by means of rollers 35, 36 thereon which move in arcuate races 31, 38 secured about the supporting arm shaft 6. The arm 1 which actuates the spreading mechanism is provided at the end nearest to the supporting arm shaft with a hook end 39. A lever 48 is fixed on the said supporting arm shaft 6 the said lever 40 carrying at its end a stud 4| which is adapted to engage in the hook end of the spreading mechanism lever arm 1 and actuate the latter. A stud 42 is also provided on the supporting arm 5 which engages in a hook end 43 formed in the end of the arm 8 which actuates the separating mechanism. The arrangement is such that when the supporting arm 5 is actuated the spreading mechanism arm 1 is rst actuated but eventually the stud 4I on the lever rides out of the hook end of the said spreading mechanism arm and the supporting arm 5 through the stud 42 and hook 43 actuates the magazine separating mechanism through the lever 8.
It is to be noted that when the supporting arm 5 is in the inactive position, the grooves 24, 3| associated with the arms 1, 8 of the spreading and separating mechanisms are aligned respectively with the tongue 23 on the toggle shaft II, and the tongues 32 on the transverse shafts 33 of the several base frames, so that as the magazine column is moved to the diierent operative positions the respective tongues and grooves are brought into engagement. However, as no spreading of the magazines is needed when the uppermost magazine is in the removal position, it is unnecessary to provide a magazine spreading lever for operating the toggle shaft Il when the magazine column is in its lowermost position.
In the construction illustrated a device is incorporated whereby the raising of a magazine is prevented until all the matrices are locked therein and for this purpose the supporting arm 5 may be provided with a stud 44 which engages in a recess 45 in an arm 46 which is held by means of a spring loaded lever 41 which in turn is held by the escapement locking pawl of the magazine. On release of the escapement locking pawl 48 the lever 41 is free to move under the influence of the spring 49 so that the recessed arm 46 can be moved manually to free the supporting arms 5.
It is further to be noted in connection with the constructional form of the invention above described, that although, as is usual, a magazine supporting arm is provided at each side of the machine, the spreading and separating connections described need be associated with only one of the said arms, the other arm being simply adjustable on the other side frameA betweenit's/A active and inactive positions.- l y Having. described our inventionrwe declare that whatwe claimand desire to secureby'Letters automatic means for engaging said lifting member and said securing member.

In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise, spreading mechanism including at least one lifting member pivotally secured to the top magazine and a securing member on at least one other magazine above the lowest adapted to engage said lifting member, in combination with automatic means for engaging said lifting member and said securing member, and toggle linkage secured to the top and bottom magazines.

In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable column- Wise, automatic mechanism for selecting the magazines to be spread for removal or replacement, in combination with spreading mechanism actuated by an extensible arm adapted to support a magazine during such removal or replacement.

In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise,l automatic mechanism' for selectingthe magazinestto be spread for removal onreplacement, in combination with spreading mechanism' and mechanism for separating saidA magazines fromtheir base framesactuated from a common source."

In a vtypographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines' adjustable columnwise,Y spreading mechanism including at least onelifting member pivotally secured to the top magazine and a securing member on at leastv one other magazine above the lowest adapted to engage said lifting member, in combination with automatic means for engaging said lifting member and said securing member, and toggle linkage secured to the top .and bottom magazines, said ltoggle linkage being actuated by rotation of a toggle shaft effected by movement of a magazine supporting arm, and actuating levers associated with each magazine except the uppermost, said levers being adapted to engage selectively with said toggle shaft.

In a typographical composing machine having'. a v plurality of `magazines adjustable columnwise, spreading mechanism including at least one lifting member pivotally secured to the top magazine and a securing member on at least one other magazine above the lowest adapted to engage said lifting member, in combination with means actuated by columnwise adjustment of the magazines for engaging said lifting member and said securing member, and toggle linkage secured to the top and bottom magazine, said toggle linkage being actuated by rotation of a toggle shaft effected by movement of a magazine supporting arm, and actuating levers associated with each magazine except the uppermost, said levers being adapted to engage selectively with said toggle shaft on columnwise adjustment of the magazines.

In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise, automatic mechanism for selecting the magazines to be spread for removal or replacement, in combination with spreading mechanism and mechanism for separating said magazines from their base frames actuated from a common source, said mechanisms being actuated through shafts which are aligned by columnwise adjustment of the magazines with levers adapted to engage with said shafts through tongue and groove connections.

In Aa typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise, automatic mechanism for selecting the magazines to be spread for removal or replacement, in combination with spreading mechanism and magazine separating mechanism actuated by an extensible arm adapted to support a magazine during such removal and replacement, said separating mechanism comprising a supporting plate pivoted to the magazine base frame and means for raising said plate during extension of said extensible arm.
14. In a typographical composing machine having a -plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise, automatic mechanism for selecting placement, in combination with means for preventing the raising of a magazine until the matrices have been locked in their channels.

In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise, means for selecting magazines to be spread actuated by the columnwse adjustment of the magazines, in combination with means for preventing the raising of a magazine until the matrices have been locked in their channels.
16. In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise, spreading mechanism actuated by an extensible arm adapted to support a magazine during such removal and replacement, in combination with automatic mechanism for selecting the magazines to be spread, and a lever locking said extensible arm and associated with matrix locking means in a magazine'to be moved.
17. In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise, spreading mechanism actuated by an extensible arm adapted to support a magazine during such removal and replacement, in combination with means for selecting magazines to be spread actuated by columnwise adjustment of the magazines, and a lever locking said extensible arm and associated with matrix locking means in a magazine to be moved.
18. In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable the magazines to be spread for removal or recolumnwise, and means for locking matrices in said magazine, spreading mechanism and mechanism for separating said magazines from their base frames actuated by an extensible arm adapted to support a magazine during such removal and replacement, in combination with automatic means for selecting magazines to be spread, and a latch locking said spreading and separating mechanism until released by said matrix locking means.
19. In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise, means for spreading apart any selected pair of adjacent magazines to permit the removal or replacement of the inner magazine of the selected pair, in combination with automatic mechanism for coupling to said magazine spreading means the selected pair of magazines yto be spread.
20. In a typographical composing machine having a plurality of magazines adjustable columnwise, means for spreading apart any selected pair of adjacent magazines to permit the removal or replacement of the inner magazine of the selected pairs in combination with means actuated by the columnwise adjustment of the magazines for coupling to said magazine spreading means the selected pair to be spread.
