UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. CARPENTER, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
SEPARABLE BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,485, dated May 11, 1880.
Application filed March 15, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. CARPEN- TER, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol,
State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in separable Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents'a bottom view of my improved separable button, partly in section, and with bottom plate removed; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line 00 00, Fig. 1. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved separable button of simple construction, in which but one pusher, instead of two, as in most buttons of this class, is employed.
The invention consists of a separable button in which the headis arranged with a fixed center post and a fixed crosspiece that forms a chamber for the pusher-actuating spring at one side of the post, a sliding pusher having a wide recessed middle portion, a short inner end acted upon by the spring, and anouter projecting end, the ends being guided in slots of the button-rim and cross-piece, while the middle portion of the pusher looks into an annular groove of the tubular shank of the basepiece. I
Referring to the drawings, A represents the button proper, and B the base-plate of the same. The button is provided with the usual solid center post, a, which fits into the hollow tubular shank b of the base-plate. A single pusher, C, moves in a slot of the rim "of the button and in a slot of a transverse plate, D, which extends at one side of the center post across the button. One end of the pusher projects to the outside of the button, and is acted upon by the finger, while the opposite end passes through the cross-plate D and is acted upon by a strong band or. other spring, d,
which is arranged in the space inclosed between the cross-plate and the connecting-rim of the button, as shown in Fig. '1. The middle portion of the pusher U is made wider, and provided with a slot whichis large enough to admit the passage of the tubular shank b. This shank is rounded off at the head, and provided with an annular groove a short distance below the head. The inner edge of the slotted portion of the pusher is beveled at one side, so as to pass readily over the head of the shank, but secure the reliable locking of the pusher with the grooved shank, and thereby the connection of the button and base-plate when .the pusher has been sprung into the groove.
By pressing on the pusher the beveled edge clears the head of the tubular shank and the button can be detached therefrom. It forms thus an easily-separated, reliably-connected, and simple separable button for cuffs, collars, and similar purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a separable button, the button-head A, having a center post, a, and a fixed cross-piece, D, forming a chamber for the spring 01 at one side thereof, and the base-plate B, having tubular shank Z), with exterior annular groove, in combination with a sliding pusher, C, having a' Wide recessed middle portion, an inner short end acted upon by the spring d, and an outer projecting end, the ends being respectively guided in slots of the button-rim and cross-piece, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this 3d day of March,
CHARLES B. CARPENTER. Witnesses:
J Aims E. CARPENTER, FRED. B. BYRAM.
