Application March 10, 1941, Serial No. 382,621
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in timers for either battery or magneto ignition systems of internal combustion engines and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying novel means for closing the breaker points.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a timer of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable. highly eilicient and reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a top plan view of an ignition timer embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the pivoted contact arm with the resilient closing element separated therefrom.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral i designates a conventional housing or shell having rotatably mounted therein the usual distributor arm shaft 2. Fixed on the shaft 2 is a cam I.
Secured in the housing I is a substantially U- shaped stationary support 4 of suitable material which terminates in an upturned end portion 5 having mounted thereon a breaker point I.
Pivotally mounted on the other end portion of the stationary support 4 is a contact arm I. The pivoted contact arm I extends adjacent the portion I of the member l and has mounted on its free end portion a breaker point 8 for engagement with the point 6. Mounted at an intermediate point on the pivoted contact arm I is a follower 9 which rides on the cam 0. Thus. the arm 1 is operatively connected to the earn 8 for actuation in one direction thereby for opening the, points I and t A conductor i0 electrically connects the contact arm I with a binding post II on the housing I.
Rising from the inner edge of the stationary support I at an intermediate point is an integral Mounted between will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the cam 3 actuates the pivoted contact arm 1 against the tension of the resilient rubber block l5 thereby opening the points 6 and 8 in an obvious manner. As the low portions of the cam 3 reach the follower l the resilient rubber block it expands and actuates the contact arm I in the opposite direction for closing the breaker points 6 and 8. Of course, the rubber block it maintains the follower l in engagement with the cam 3.
It is believed that the many advantages of an ignition timer constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. An ignition timer comprising a stationary support, a breaker point on said support, a pivoted contact arm, a breaker point on said contact arm engageable with the first named breaker point, opposed cups mounted on the support and the contact arm, and a compressible block engaged in said cups for actuating the contact arm for closing the breaker points.
2. An ignition timer comprising a stationary support, a pivoted contact arrm opposed breaker points mounted on the support and the contact arm and engageable with each other, an integral flange rising from the support, opposed cups mounted on said flange and on the contact arm, and a compressible block engaged in said cups for actuating the contact arm for closing the breaker point.
3. An ignition timer of the character described comprising a housing. a cam rotatably mounted in the housing. a substantially u-shaped. stationary support mounted in the housing, a-
breaker point on one end portion of said support. a contact arm pivotally mounted on the other end portion of said support, a breaker point on the free end portion of the contact arm engageable with the first named breaker point, means operatively connecting the arm to the cam for actuation in one direction thereby for opening the breaker points, an integral flange rising from the inner edge of the stationary support at an intermediate point, opposed cups mounted on said flange and on an intermediate portion of the contact arm, and a compressible rubber block engaged in said cups and constituting means for actuating the contact arm in the opposite direction for closing the breaker points.
