3 Claims.
This invention relates to stokers adapted to feed through an opening in a furnace. wall, and more particularly, to an improved stoker for firing a locomotive boiler firebox throughthe usual hand firing opening in the firebox backwall.
An object of the invention is to provide a stoker of the type described that obstructs a minimum of space at the firing opening leaving the greater portion of the opening unobstructed permitting convenient access to the firebox for manual delivery of fuel or for the purpose of entry into the firebox.
More specifically, an object of the invention is to provide a stoker of the type described applicable to a locomotive firebox without enlarging' the conventional hand firing opening and providing an unobstructed space in the firin opening permitting convenient access to the firebox for manual delivery of pose of entry into the firebox.
Further objects and advantages of the invention reside in the novel construction of parts and the novel combination and relation ofelements, all as brought out in the following description and the appended claims.

The invention is shown for purpose of illustration as applied to a locomotive firebox, though it will be apparent from the following description that it is applicable as well to other types of fireboxes.
In the drawings, a locomotive, indicated generally by the numeral I0, is provided with a firebox ll having a boiler taken on the line fuel or for the pura conventional firing opening l3 therein. A' cab deck l4 extends rearwardly from the backhead 12 below. the level of the firing opening l3. The
conventional firing opening is of general elliptical,
shape, measuring '20 inches along its major diameter and 16 inches alongits minor diameter.
The stoker is indicated generally by the numeral 15, only so muchthereof being shown ,as is essential to a complete understanding of the invention. The portion of the stoker conveying fuel forwardly from the tender to the locomotive may be of any suitable construction well known in the art. The stoker includes a discharge conduit l6 extending upwardly and lar conduit 11 offset at one side of the vertical longitudinal central plane of the ,firing opening and an elbow shaped conduit J8 secured to the upper end of the tubular conduit H by suitable means, such as the bolts l9, passing throughthe circumferentially extending flanges 20 and 2| of backhead l2 provided with table 30 the conduit l1 and elbow l8, respectively.
A frame 22, preferably, though not necessarily, formed as an integral part of the elbow 18, embraces the firing opening 13 and is securedto the backhead 12 by suitable means, as by the bolts 23 passing through the flange 22a of the'frame. The elbow l8 communicates with the'frame 22 through an opening 24 in the lower portion of the side wall 25 of the frame 22 and fuel is urged upwardly through'the tubular conduit l1 and elbow l8 and into the'frame 22 by a screw conveyor 26. The frame 22 is open at its rearward end, the opening being substantially the samesize as the firing opening. A- pair of door members 21 and 28 are mounted at the upper rearward end of the frame 22'which, during normal operation of the Stoker, form a closure for the firing opening [3. The door members 21 and 28 are preferably arranged to swing laterally in opposite directions and upwardly, and when open permit manual introduction of fuel through the tunnel formed by the frame 22 and into the firebox and also permit entry into the firebox.
The frame 22 carries a fuel distributing means including a chambered pressure fiuid distributor head 29 and a distributing table 30, the distributor head 29 being seated on the bottom wall 3| of the frame 22 adjacent the opening 24 in the sidewall 25 of the frame, and the distributing is secured to the frame by bolts 32 passing through a flange 33 depending from the bottom wall 3| of the frame. A reduced portion 35 of the distributor head 29 extends through an opening 36 in the bottom wall 3| of the frame and a pipe 3'! leading from a suitable source of fluid under pressure is threaded in the lower end thereof for supplying pressure fluid to chamber 38. A bolt 39 extending through a. flange 40 formed with the elbow l8 and through the bottom wall of the-frame, is threaded into the distributor head securing it in place.
The distributing table 30 is preferably of the type having a removable forward portion, so that the forward portion which is most exposed to the heat of the firebox, can bereplaced without requiring replacement of the entire distributing table. The table 30 is disposed closely adjacent the lower margin of the firing opening and the distributor head 29 is at the rear of and at one side of the table so that when the door members 21 and 28. are opened, practically the. entire firing opening is available for hand firing or for gaining access to the firebox.
The front face -H of the distributor head 29 is provided with a plurality of jet openings 42 communicating withthe chamber 38. The plane of the front face 4| 'is angularly disposed with respect to the central vertical longitudinal plane of the firing opening and the jet openings are directed across all parts of the distributing table 30 so that the pressure fluid blast issuing from the jet openings 42 projects fuel from the table 30 into the firebox. Ribs 43 and 44, one on each side of the upper surface of the table 30 curve forwardly and laterally toward a respective rear corner of the firebox for. deflecting. a portion of the fuel to the rear corners.
With thejet head 29 at one. side of the table 30, with its front face angularly disposed and the'jet openings 42 directed across all parts of the table, most of the fuel would normally be projected to that side of the firebox toward which the jet head 29 faces. To provide for even distribution of fuel over all parts of the firebed in the firebox, a plurality of ribs 45 are-provided on the top surface of the table 36 between the ribs 43 and 44, curving forwardly and laterally toward that side of the firebox that would normally receive less fuel.
In Fig. 7 is shown a modified form of the invention in which the screw conveyor 28a, instead of extending into the elbow l8, asin the preferred form of the invention, is terminated within the straight tubular conduit portion ll. In this construction, the fuel is forced through the elbow [8 by the pressure exerted against the fuel by the screw conveyor 26d, while in the preferred form of the invention, the screw conveyor. 26 conveys the fuel directly to the distributor head 29.
I- claim:
1. In combination with a furnace having an upright wall provided with a firing opening, a stoker including afuel elevator having a delivery opening adjacent said: upright wall and at one side of the central longitudinal vertical plane of the firing opening, a plate centrally disposed in said firing opening adjacent the lower margin thereof, said plate arranged to receive fuel from said fuel elevator on a rear corner portion of its upper surface, and a pressure fluid distributor adjacent the delivery end of said fuel elevator and adjacent the lower lateral extremity of said firing opening and wholly at one side of said plane, said distributor being adapted for the emission of fluid under pressure across the full width of the upper surface said plate for projecting the fuel from the rear corner portion of said plate into the firebox.
2; In combination with a furnace having an upright wall provided with a firing opening, a stoker including a substantially straight riser conduit having its upper end disposed at one side of the central longitudinal vertical plane of the firing opening and an elbow-shaped conduit at the upper end of said straight riser conduit, said straight riser conduit being so disposed that the extension of a vertical plane passing longitudinally through theriser conduit intersects the backhead at one sideof the firing opening therein, said elbow-shaped conduit having its delivery end adjacent said upright wall at one side of the central longitudinal vertical plane of the firing opening and opening laterally with respect to said riser conduit toward said lastnamed plane, means for urging fuel through said riser conduit and said elbow-shaped conduit, a plate centrally disposed in said firing opening adjacent the lower margin thereof, said plate arranged to receive fuel from said elbow-shaped conduit on a rear corner portion of its upper surface, and a pressure fluid'distributor adjacent the delivery end of said elbow-shaped conduit wholly at one side of said last-named plane and adjacent the lower lateral extremity of said firing opening arranged for emission of fluid under pressure across said plate for projecting the fuel from the rear corner portion of said plate into the firebox.
3. In combination with a furnace having a grate and an upright Wall provided with a firing opening, a stoker includinga fuel feed conduit having a delivery opening adjacent said upright wall and at one side of the central longitudinal vertical plane of the firing opening, a pressure fluid distributor head adjacent the delivery end of said fuel feed conduit wholly at one side of said plane and adjacent a lateral extremity of said firing opening, said distributor head being arranged to issue blasts of pressure fluid from the said lateral extremity vof "the firing. opening obliquely thereinto, means for urging fuel into the zone of action of the pressure fluid. distributor head and means spaced forward and at one side of said distributor head constructed and arranged to divert a portion of the obliquely projected fuel forwardly and laterally in the opposite direction.
