2 Claims.
v The present invention relates to sandwich containers and more specifically to a paper orcardboard container for sandwiches enabling the handling or display of such articles in a more sanitary and convenient fashion.
Among the objects of the invention isa bonnet type container that will be of low cost, easily arranged for the reception of a sandwich, and will firmly retain the latter to permit easy handling.
Another object is a container which when opened provides plate or tray for use by the consumer.
Still another object is a container provided with means for maintaining it in upright position for display purposes.
Other objects and advantages will readily occur to those skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 illustrates one form of blank for use as a container when folded.
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the container in use.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same.
As shown, the container is made by properly manipulating a blank of paper, cardboard or other suitable material such as is shown in Figure 1, which blank consists of a body or plate portion I having a plurality of radially arranged tongues II, I2, I3 and I4, preferably equally spaced, and of which two, diametrically opposite, are provided with suitable notches I5 near their ends. Instead of two notches I5, asshown, in each tongue, any desired number of course, may be used. Further, it is proposed also to omit the tongue I4 if and when desired.
In order to adapt the container for display purposes, one of the tongues, for example tongue I I,
may be provided witha foot piece 20 extending at right angles thereto near the tongue end. This may be integral with or fixed to the tongue in any suitable manner. I
Further, the plate or body I 0 may, as indicated,
have any suitable advertising matter or name printed, stamped or otherwise placed thereon.
' In using the container, the sandwich, indicated at 2 I, is placed upon the plate portion, the tongue I3 (or I3 and I4) folded over it, and the tongues II and I2 also, folded over and hooked together as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the foot permitting standing it on edge as shown.
Now having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A device for enclosing a sandwich comprising a front body portion of substantially the area of the sandwich and having flexible tongue portions extending rearwardly from the edges thereof and inwardly toward one another and having notched terminal portions interengaged with one another to hold said tongues in said relation around the sandwich, and a third flexible tongue I extending rearwardly from said body portion at a point intermediate the two first mentioned tongues and projecting inwardly around the sandwich and underlying and being frictionally retained by said first two mentioned tongues and.
between said first two mentioned tongues and the sandwich.
2. A device for enclosing a sandwich comprising a flat front body portion of substantially the area and configuration of the sandwich, flexible tongue portions extending integrally rearwardly and inwardly from the edges of said body portion and substantially at diametrically opposite points and having notched terminal sections interengaged with and retaining-: one another,
