This invention relates to telephone substation apparatus and more particularly to electromagnetic signaling devices especially suitable for use in combined mountings for hand telephones.
One object of this invention is to reduce the overall dimensions of combined mountings for hand telephones.
Another object of this invention is to simplify the structure of ringers for telephone substation sets and thereby to facilitate the construction and assembly thereof.
A further object of this invention is to enable adjustment of the intensity of the signal produced by a ringer in hand telephone mountings,

In one illustrative embodiment of this invention, a mounting for a hand telephone comprises a housing having a base upon which various elements of substation apparatus, such as a condenser, induction coil and ringer, are mounted.-
The ringer comprises a pair of bells mounted eccentrically with respect to one another, and electromagnetic actuating mechanism therefor mounted within one of the bells. The actuating mechanism includes a magnetic core, a coil encompassing the core and a pole-piece aflixed to one end of the core and having spaced pole tips. A second pole-piece is aflixed to the other end of the core and is provided with divergent arms, each terminating in a pole tip adjacent one of the first pole tips. An armature carrying a clapper adapted to strike both of the bells is pivotally mounted at its center and has its ends extending between corresponding pole tips.
The base of the housing is provided with apertures adjacent the ringer, through which sound waves emanating from the bells may pass. Mounted upon the base is a rotatable shutter through the agency of which the area of the apertures may be adjusted to vary the intensity of the signal produced by the ringer.
The invention and the various features thereof will be understood more clearly and fully from the following detailed description with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: I
Fig. 1 is a side view partly in section and partly broken away of a mounting for hand telephones, illustrative of one embodiment of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base of the mounting illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the arrangement of the various apparatus mounted thereon;
Fig. 3 is a side view, mainly in section, of the electromagnetic signaling device or ringer constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the association of the base of the mounting, the signaling device andthe shutter for varying the intensity of the signal emanating from the device; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the apparatus illustrated in Fig. 5.
Referring now to the drawings, the combined mounting shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a housing l0 having a, metallic base plate II, and having also a cradle I2 for supporting a hand telephone. The cradle I2 is affixed to the housing III by screws i3, only one of which is shown, and may be rotated through 180 degrees so that the mounting may be adapted to either desk or wall use. Mounted within the cradle is a reciprocable plunger H which carries at its lower end a roller l5 contacting with a pivotally mounted lever 16 for actuating the contact springs H. The plunger Hi may be guided by a grooved roller l8 so that lateral movement thereof is prevented.
A truncated support l3, adapted to mount a dialing mechanism 20, is positioned upon the front wall of the housing [0 and aflixed thereto by a cross-bar member 2|. The support if! is rotatable upon the wall of the housing so that the dialing mechanism may be positioned properly when the mounting is used as either a desk or a wall set.
As shown in Fig. 2, various elements of substation apparatus, such as a terminal block 22, a condenser 23, an induction coil 24, and a signaling device or ringer are mounted upon the base I I of the housing.
The signaling device or ringer, as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4, comprises a pair of bells and 25 and an electromagnetic actuating unit therefor contained within the bell 25. The actuating unit includes a coil 21 encompassing a core 28 and mounted upon a non-magnetic base member 29, which is ailixed to the bell 25 by a threaded coupler member 30 and a screw 3!. A pole-piece 32 having divergent pole tips 33, is aflixed to one end of the core 28. A second pole-piece includes a portion 34 aflixed to the other end of the core 28, divergent arms 35, and inwardly bent pole tips 36, each of which is opposite a corresponding one of the pole tips 33 and forms a magnetic gap therewith.
A V-shaped polarized armature 37, for example of magnetic alloy such as cobalt iron, has its ends positioned in the magnetic gaps formed by the pole tips 33 and 36, and is mounted upon a support 38 which carries also a clapper 39. The sup- Fig. 4 is a top view of the signaling device 55 port 38 is pivoted upon a shaft or axle 40 which extends through the base member 29 and through a plate 4| disposed above the coil 21 and held by arms 42 integral with and extending from the base member 29. The plate 4| supports the bell 26, which is mounted eccentrically with respect to the bell 25 by a tubular member 43 fixed to the plate 4|. Preferably the tubular member is eccentric with respect to the bell 26.
The leading-in conductors (not shown) for the coil 21 may be connected to insulated terminals 44 which have extensions 45 passing through apertures 46 in the bell 25, these apertures being so located that they do not modify materially the tone of the signal emitted from the bell 25.
The bell 25 may be provided with an indented portion 51 adapted to be struck by the clapper 39. Adjustment of the clapper with respect to the bell 25 may be effected by bending the pivoted support 38. Adjustment of the bell 26 with respect to the clapper 39 may be eifected by rotation of the bell.
When the coil 2'! is energized by an alternating ringing current, the armature oscillates at the frequency of the ringing current and thereby vibrates the clapper 39, which strikes alternately the inside of the bell 25 and the outside of the bell 26.
Inasmuch as the mounting may be utilized in either a desk set or a wall set, it is desirable that the intensity of the sound emitted by the ringer may be adjusted readily. Such adjustment may be effected by the arrangement illustrated in Figs. and 6. As shown in these figures, the base plate II is provided with a series of apertures 41 arranged in a circle, adjacent the ringer. The effective area of these apertures 41 may be controlled by a rotatable shutter 48 having apertures 49 corresponding to the apertures 41. The shutter 48 is fixed upon the base plate H by a washer 50 which is held in place by the screw 3|. The shutter 48 may be provided with integral resilient tabs or fingers 5| so that it may be held against the base H by friction and locked in any desired position.
Although a specific embodiment of this invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope and spirit of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A signaling device comprising a bell, a plate member mounted within said bell, a second plate member spaced from said first plate member, a second bell mounted upon said second plate member, a shaft extending between said plate members and supported thereby, a rockable member pivoted on said shaft, a hammer carried by said rockable member and positioned to strike said bells, and an actuating unit mounted within said first bell and between said plate members. said unit including an armature connected to said rockable member.
2. A signaling device comprising a pair of spaced plate members, a coil between said plate members, means mounting said coil between said plate members, a pole-piece adjacent one end of said coil having divergent pole tips extending toward the other end of said coil, 2. second polepiece having a central portion adjacent said other end and a pair of arms between said plate members and on opposite sides of said coil, said arms terminating in inwardly extending pole tips each opposite a corresponding one of said first pole tips, a shaft extending between said plate members, a support pivotally mounted on said shaft, and a polarized armature connected to said support and having spaced portions between corresponding pole tips.
3. A signaling device comprising an energizing coil, a pole-piece having a portion adjacent one end of said coil and arms extending along opposite sides of said coil, said arms having pole-tips extending inwardly therefrom toward said coil and inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis
