SAMUEL COLT, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
CANTEEN GUN-STOCK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 22,627, dated January 18, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL COLT, of Hartford, county of Hartford, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gun-Stocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in converting the butt of the stock into a reservoir having a suitable opening and stopper, and serving, generally, the purposes of a canteen, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1, Plate I, represents a perspective view of my improved canteen-stock; and Fig. 2, Plate I, a vertical longitudinal section through the center of the same. Fig. 1, Plate II, represents a perspective view of a modification of my improvement; and Fig. 2, Plate II, a vertical longitudinal section through the center of the same at Figs. 1 and 2, Plate I. A represents the gunstock, which is made hollow, of metal, or other suitable material, and in which, at B, is formed a short neck or mouth having an internal or female screw cut on it to accommodate a screw-stopper, C. Said stopper C is furnished with an india-rubber or other suitable packing, as seen at i, Fig. 2, Plate I, and is attached, by a small swivel, c, to a short chain, (1, which is connected, by means of a loop, a, or otherwise, to the neck of the stock.
Figs. 1 and 2, Plate II, illustrate amodification of my improvement, in which the stock, instead of being formed hollow, of metal or other material, as seen in PlateiI, is made of two pieces of wood, A A, each one of which constitutes one-half of the stock, and is hollowed out in its side adjacent to the other, so
bodied in the said stock AA, and which is formed with a short neck, I), having a screwthread cut in it, as described of 0, Plate I.
Said neck b is represented as being embraced by the stock-pieces A A, and of such lengths as that its outward end shall come about flush with the outer surface of the stock at a. C is a screwstopper similar to that seen at Plate I, which fits the neck or mouth piece I) of the canteen B, and is attached to the stock by a chain, D, and staple c.
It will be understood that the stock represented in Figs. 1 and 2, Plate I, may be made of one solid piece of metal, or of parts, as may be deemed expedient; or that it may be formed of gutta-percha or other material, and varied in form and detail without departing from the sp rit of my invention. It will also be understood that the stock represented at Figs. 1
and 2, Plate II, may be made in one or more pieces of wood, with the canteen embodied in it; and that I am aware that my improvement is subject to innumerable modifications in the formation of the stock and materialused. I do not, therefore, wish to limit myself to any particularity of construction or kind of material; but
- I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent So constructing the stock of a gun that it shall constitute a canteen, substantially as described.
' In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand and seal this 25th day of October. 1858.
