BROOM-H EAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,124, dated March 30, 1880.

Application filed May 27, 1879.

To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that LJONATHAN R. SPENCER, of Avilla, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved broom-head. Fig. 2 is an end or edge view. Fig. 3 is a bottom view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinall section, and Figs. 5? and 5b are sections of the tubular adjustable draw-bolts which form a part of my improvement.

This invention relates to that class of broomheads in which the broom-corn is clamped between two plates or frames secured Vupon the end of the handle; and it consists in the combination of the handle, clamping-plates, and tubular draw-bolts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the drawings, A is the broom-handle, which is .tapered oft', as shown at a, at its lower end, which is inserted int-o the head. This is formed by two frames or skeleton plates, B B', united by the adjustable drawbolts G C.

The upper part of each of the frames B B has a semicircular collar, b b, impinging upon the lower round part of the handle A, and secured thereto by strong cord or wire c.

Each of the draw-bolts (l consists, preferably, of two parts-viz., a tubular shank, d,

having a head,.c, at one end, and providedwith an inner screw-thread, and a screw, f, which fits into the screw-threaded tube d, and is, in like manner, provided with a head, g.

The screw f, which works in the screwthreaded tube d, maybe made in one orin two parts, as shown in Figs. 5fb and 5b, respectively, It' made in two parts, tube d is made without a head, in place of which each of the screw-sections f is provided with a head, g g, as shown clearly in Fig. 5b.

These draw-bolts are arranged in the head in the manner shown in Figs. l and -that is, one on each side of the handle in the upper part of the head, one in the middle of the lower part of the head, which passes through a perforation in the tapering part a ofthe handle, and one in each lower corner of the head. In filling the head plates B B are loosened by unscrewingthe screws f of bolts C, the heads of which, as well as the heads of the tubes d, are tted in countersunk perforations in their respective frames or plates, so that the head will present a smooth and finished appearance. It is not necessary to withdraw the screws from their tubes, as without this the plates B B will be a sufficient distance apart to permit oi' the insertion of the broom-corn, which is placed between the two plates on each side of the handle, a bunch of long straw or similar material having iirst been placed in the head, close up against and around the handle. After the head has been lled the plates B B are tightened down by turning the screws j' back into their tubes d, when a solid and compact head is formed.

I prefer to place two rows of stitching below the head, about two and three inches, respectively, below the lower rim ot the head, whichu m akes a very stron g and' durable broom of a neat and iinished appearance.

I am aware that tubular' draw-bolts have been used before in the construction of broomheads, and I do not claim such construction broadly; but,

Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a broom-head, the combination, substantially as set forth, of the handle A, having tapering perforated section a, detachable clamping-plates B B', provided with semicircular collars bb', and detachable tubular and adjustable draw-bolts C, arranged in plates B B with reference to said plates and to the perforated tenon a of the handle A, as shown and described.
