Description

E. COVERT. Thill-Adjuster.
Patented Mar. 30,1880.

NJFETERS, PHGTD-IJTHOGHAFHER, WASHINGTON n c NITED STATES ENOGH COVERT, OF FARMER VILLAGE, NEW YORK.
TH I LL-ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,039, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed February 25, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOOH OovEE'r, of Farmer Village, in the county of Seneca, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft- Adjusters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device to aid in adjusting shafts and poles to vehicles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- A represents a lever of any suitable dimensions, formed at one end with a fork, B, to fit on the shaft-coupling or axle-clip. A suitable distance from this fork the lever is formed with an enlargement, as shown at a, through which enlargement is a mortise for the passage of an arm, 0. This arm 0 is at one end formed with a fork, D, having a key or screwbolt, 1), through the ends of its prongs. The arm 0 may be adjusted in the mortise of the lever, and is pivoted therein by means of a set-screw, F, passing through from one side and screwing into the other side.
The fork B at the end of the lever fits over the shaft-couplin g or axle-clip at the back part of the axle, and the fork D on the end of the adjustable arm 0 is fitted to the shaft or pole by means of the key or screwbolt b. By a slight movement of the lever the shaft-iron is drawn against the rubber packing in the coupling, thereby compressing the rubber sufficiently for the shaft-bolt to easily enter its proper place. I
The other end of the lever A is slotted longitudinally, as shown at m, and at the extreme end is formed a stationary jaw, G.
H is a slide, formed with a jaw, G, and adjusted with relation to the jaw G by means of the screw I, passing through the slot as and screwing into the slide H or into a nut, d, thus forming a wrench, by means of which the not on the coupling-bolt may be fastened; or this Wrench may be used for any purpose where an ordinary wrench can be used. The slide H is provided on each side with a longitudinal flange, h, to fit over the edge of the lever, so as to prevent twisting. The wrench end of the lever .is constructed with one or more ridges, 'i, and the slide H has one or more corresponding grooves, thereby securing the slide more securely whenbein g operated as a wrench.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the mortised lever A, formed with fork B, and the arm 0, formed with the fork D, and having the key b, and adjustable in the mortise, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the lever A, provided with fork B, slot 00, and ridges i, and jaw Gr, the adjustable arm 0, with fork D,.and the movable slide H, with jaw G, and flanges h, substantially as and for the purposes. herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of February, 1880.
ENOOH COVERT. [L. s.] Witnesses:
O. G. WHEELER, D. 0. WHEELER.
