Description
I Sept. 16, 1941. I o. E. RIEDEL DOOR ATTACHMENT Filed June 28, 1940 I v tilventor fliaai'llledql Patented Sept. 16, 1941 warren stares PATENT ore-ice.
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in attachments for doors and the like.
An object of the invention is the provision of a door attachment which is designed to prevent clandestine withdrawal of a door fastening bolt.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a guard-forming door attachment which can be quickly and easily fitted upon a door frame.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a guard-attachment for doors which can be readily fitted on doors of varying size.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progrosses.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of the attachment showing the sections in separated relation,
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the attachment sections operatively mounted on the frame of the door,
Figure 3 is an end view of the same showing a door latch associated therewith,
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on the line 44 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a perspective View of a modified form of the attachment, and
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view through the same attached to a door frame.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, M generally designates the main section of the device, embodying a rigid plate formed of sheet metal or the like, shaped to provide a fastening plate In of elongated rectangular formation.
At one longitudinal edge of the plate I!) is formed an extension part, shaped to form a rectangular laterally protruding face portion I I having a rectangular central area struck and bent rearwardly to form a right angularly projecting medial flange I2. At the ends of the projecting portion II are provided approximately rectangular shaped end flanges I3 extending at right angles to the face portion II, as shown to advantage at Figure 1. At the outer longitudinal edge portion of the face part II is provided a right angularly extending side flange I 4 somewhat narrower than, and bent so that the ends are pressed against the outer edges of, the end flanges I3.
A section 0 complementary to the section M embodies a rigid strip of metal or the like bent longitudinally to form a relatively narrow flange I6 and a right angular generally wider flange II. This flange is cut to form therein a longitudinally elongated recess I8 in the outer portion, the length of which corresponds to the length of the plate I0 to slidably receive the latter therein. Intermediate the ends of the recess I8 the edge portion of the flange I1 is cut and bent in a direction opposed to the extension of the flange I6 to form a right angular narrow lip I9.
The device is fitted on the frame of the door by initially mounting the section 0 so that the flange I1 is arranged, in flush position, against the face of the door jamb, designated at J, while the right angular flange I6 is mounted in flush position against the side edge of a stop strip S, as shown at Figure 2. The section is firmly fastened in position by means of screws 2| extended through countersunk holes 22 while a groove is formed in the jamb to accommodate the inwardly projecting lip I9. The companion section M is disposed with the plate I0 fitted flush against the face of the jamb with the inner end portion in registration with the recess I8 in the section 0, screws 24 extending through holes 23 to fasten the plate in position. The laterally projecting portion of the plate I ll protrudes from the side edge of the frame jamb, forming a keeper frame having the face portion II co-planar with the plate l0 while the medial flange I2 fits against the side of the jamb and is secured thereto by a screw 25. The inner edges'of the end flanges I3 likewise fit against the side of the door frame so that these flanges, together with the outer flange I4, make a strong firmly mounmd keeper frame.
The modified form of the device, shown at Figures 5 and 6, provides a unitary structure formed of a metallic sheath shaped to provide an elongated body plate 26 having the inner longitudinal edge portion bent to form a right angular flange 2'! adapted to be fitted against the door frame stop. At the opposite outer edge of the plate 26, intermediate the ends, is formed a laterally projecting keeper frame F having the right angular flange structure corresponding to the frame shown and described in the preferred form of the attachment.
This construction presents an efficient guard plate which can be readily mounted on the frame jamb of the door to provide an effective guard which will prevent clandestine retraction of a locking bolt, as for instance the bolt B of the night-latch L, as by the insertion of an instrument for engaging and withdrawing the beveled head of the bolt. Furthermore, the attachment affords a very durable and efficient keeper frame. It will also be noted that the two-piece form of the device is conveniently adjustable in the as sembly of, the sections to fit door jambs of varying width, due to the engageable relation of the holder plate I 0 with the recess I 8 in the inner flange of the companion section 0.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention herein shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted 110 of the frame member to reinforce the said member.
OSCAR E. RIEDEL.
