GARBAGE RECEPTACLE STAND Filed May 17, 1939 Mun nvena-r:
MW @D Patented Sept. 2, 1941 2,254,898 GARBAGE RECEPTACLE STAND Norman Joseph Lis-ige, Detroit, Mich., assignerV of" four-fifths. to .Joseph J. Laige, Detroit, Mich.
Application May-1 7, 1939, seria-1 No. 274,22f
1 Claim.
This invention relates to garbage-receptacleretaining-stands; especially to such adapted for use in alley-Ways for homes and apartments.
One of the objects sought is the production of such a retaining-stand, which would have a durable structure, capable of withstanding the usual rough handling by garbage collectors; a construction embodying simplicity, eciency and economy. The conventional alley garbage receptacle is constructed of cement, and is therefore com paratively large and cumbersome, and so costly, the average householder cannot afford such a receptacle.
It is found that the metal fabricated garbage receptacle stands, that are offered for sale, are entirely inadequate for alley service because of their inconvenience, and frail, collapsible structure.
Another object achieved is the elimination of exposing to the air garbage germs, incident, it is believed, to all garbage receptacles.
A further object attained, is the facility with which the retaining stand is located and immovably fixed in position; an opened locked-position of the lid for the depositing of garbage, and also for the removal of the receptacle by the garbage-man; the use of comparatively any kind of can for the retaining-stand, there being means of adjustment to suit the height of such receptacle; a closed locked-position of the lid which presses with yielding resistance against the rim of the receptacle, there being interposed between the said lid and rim, a sponge rubber gasket that insures an air-tight condition, thus held, the lid is securely closed against rodents and other predatory animals. l c
The invention contemplates a single upright member having a crow-foot-like pedestal which is adapted to xedly engage a foundation of wood or cement by means of a single wood-screw or cement screw-bolt. A hinged lid mounted on the top portion of the upright and connected by a lid-operating link, the said link being operably joined to a pedal which rotatably engages a bearing journal fixedly positioned in the side of the said upright member.
The invention further contemplates a ringlike member of angular material adapted to provide a stand or retainer for a garbage receptacle, the annular opening of the said ring-member being substantially perpendicular to the said upright member and slidably fixed thereto by means of a suitable set-screw; a locking catch formed on a side of the said ring-member and adapted to engage' similar means formed onA the said lid operating-link. i Y
The invention anticipates an alley location affording a,V maximum of conveniencel for-the home; the expedition'with which the'fgar-bage-man is enabled to remove and replace the receptacle, the air-tight sealing of the garbage lid, whichv reduces the risk of disease nated germs'.Y 1
Further novel and useful features be observed by reference to the drawing and detail specification which hereinafter will be more particularly described and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing it is to be understood Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of a garbage receptacle retaining-stand embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the said retainingstand.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of a pedestal upon which the said retaining-stand is erected.
Fig. 4 is an upright view of the said pedestal illustrating the form of its top side.
The invention comprises a single uprightmember 5, preferably formed of ordinary piping; a crow-foot-like pedestal 6, preferably, made of inexpensive cast iron is formed, having bifurcated branch foundation supports I and an approximately central crosspiece 8 provided with a bolt opening 9 to facilitate the anchoring of the pedestal to its foundation. -An opening l0 is formed in the hub ll of the pedestal and threaded for the engagement of the upright-member five.
A garbage receptacle lid l2 is provided with a lifting arm I3 spot-Welded, thereto, one end of the said armV I5 being xedly attached to a bear-V ing journal I6 rotatably mounted in the top portion :of the upright-member five, perpendicular thereto. An arm I'I is xedly attached to the other end of the bearing journal sixteen and is equipped at its other end with a hinge arrangement I8, which engages a hinge arrangement I9 formed on the end of a lid-lifting link 2,0.
In the lower portion of the upright member five, and perpendicularly thereto, is rigidly mounted a bearing journal 2|, and hinged thereto is provided a pedal 22. To the said pedal isl connected the lower end of the lid-lifting link twenty by means of a hinge arrangement 23. y
A single cast iron ring-like member 24 having an angular inside 25 formation adapted to retain and support a garbage receptacle 26 is provided with a hub 21 machined toslidably encompass the upright member iive, a set-screw provision being employed by which to adjust and secure in position the said ring-like member.
Formed on one side of the said ring-like member is a projection 28 adapted to engage a similai` projection 29 carried by the lid-lifting link twenty, the purpose of such arrangement being to lock and prevent the receptacle lid twelve from opening when closed and preventing it from closing when opened, except by a trained action of the foot when applied to the pedal.
On the inner side of lthe re'ceptacle lid twelve is formed a soft rubber gasket 30- -by a known process of pressure, which tenaciously binds the rubber to the metal. In a closed position the said receptacle lid ts in air-tight relation with the rim 3| of the receptacle twenty-six.
. The manner of operation is as follows:
The pedal is pressed slightly outward and then downward. The lid moves upward -and opens to a position of 90 from a horizontal plane. The pedal is now slightly drawn inwardly, when the locking mechanism described is in* evidence. Ay like f'ootaction serves to close and lock the shut lid. s
Having described the invention by drawing and specification in a manner, it is believed,V sufciently clear to enable anyone familiar with the art to which it appertains, to design and build it, what I claim as new is:
A cover operator and holder for garbage cans and the like, comprising a vertical supporting member, a garbage-can-container adjustably connected thereto; the supporting member being laterally formed near the top end with an opening, a bearing rod rotatably mounted therein; a garbage can cover, an arm adapted to connect with and operate said garbage can cover iixedly j attached to one end of the said bearing rod; an
actuating arm removably mounted on the other end of the said bearing rod and adapted to immovably connect therewith; the said actuating arm having in its opposite end formed a bearing for the reception of a journal, the said journal being a part of a link adapted to workably connect with a pedal; one end of the said pedal being workably mounted 'on a bearing rod xedly positioned in the lower end of the said supporting member; a projection' integrally formed on the side of the said garbage-canretainer adapt#
