Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in water tables on which the crown blocks of an oil well derrick are mounted.
The general object of the invention is to provide a resiliently supported water table which absorbs the shocks and jars imparted to the derrick during drilling operations, thereby diminishing injury to the derrick, cables and various blocks and sheaves.
Another object of the invention is to provide a frame including a plurality of pulleys which are resiliently supported in a novel manner.
Other objects and the advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the upper portion of a well derrick showing my improved water table operatively positioned thereon;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the top portion of a derrick with the frame of the water table removed; 7
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of the water table frame with parts thereof broken away;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is an elevation of an oil well derrick showing my improved device thereon.
This application is filed as a substitute for my forfeited and abandoned application, Serial 'NO. 452,447, filed May 14, 1930.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters I have indicated generally at H! a structural steel derrick such as is commonly used in drilling an oilwell. As shown the top structure of the derrick includes a plurality of angle members l2 which are arranged to form the base upon which my improved device is mounted.
Secured to the angles l2 at each corner of the derrick top I provide a bracket 14 which includes a horizontal base l5 shown as secured to the angles l2 by a plurality of rivets l6 and a pair of vertical right angle members l'l. Secured to the base I5 I provide a stud l8 and surrounding the stud I provide a heavy coiled spring [9.
Mounted on the springs I9 I provide a frame indicated at 20 which is shown as constructed of a plurality of I-beams 2| which are secured together at each corner by an angle plate 22, a member 23 and a plurality of rivets 24. Each of the members 23 is L-shaped and includes an enlarged portion 25 which is provided with bearing faces arranged at right angles to each other and which are adapted to engage the inner surfaces of thevertical right angle members I! of the adjacent bracket l4 and prevent lateral movement of the frame.
Mounted on the frame 20 I provide a plurality of bearings 26 in which are journaled shafts 21 on which pulleys 28 are mounted. Also mounted on the frame 20 I provide another frame indicated at 29 on which I provide a plurality of bearings 30 for supporting a shaft 3| on which a plurality of pulleys 32 are mounted. These various pulleys may be positioned in the conventional well drilling arrangement or in any other position desired.
As shown in Fig. 5 some of the pulleys are rove with a cable 33 which supports a traveling block 34 from which a string of Well drilling tools 35 is suspended.
During operation of a rig equipped with my invention the jaws and shocks of the well drilling tools are largely absorbed by the resilient action of the coiled springs l9 while the actual drilling operation is improved.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided a novel water table for well drilling derricks which is simple in construction and highly efiicient in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. For use with a derrick, a water table including a base, a plurality of brackets secured to said base, each of said brackets including vertical corner portions, a vertical stud on each of said brackets, a coiled spring surrounding each stud, a frame engaging said springs, a plurality of members on said frame, bearing portions on said members, said bearing portions slidably engaging said vertical corner portions of said brackets and a plurality of pulleys operatively mounted on said frame.
2. In combination with a Well derrick including a top member, a bracket secured to said member adjacent each corner of said derrick, each of said brackets including vertical corner portions, a frame, said frame including a plurality of structural members secured together, a member at each corner of said frame, said corner members including a portion having bearing faces slidably engaging said vertical corner portions of said brackets, and resilient members interposed between said brackets and said frame.
3. In a device of the class described, a polygonal base, a bracket rigidly secured to said base adjacent each corner thereof, each of said brackets including vertical corner portions, a vertical stud on each of said brackets, a coiled spring surrounding each stud, a frame positioned on said springs, said frame comprising structural members secured together, a member at each corner of said frame, said corner members having enlarged portions and being rigidly secured to said structural members, said enlarged portions including bearing faces adapted to engage said vertical corner portions of said brackets, a plurality of pulleys operatively mounted on said frame, a second frame supported by said first frame and a plurality of pulleys operatively mounted on said second frame.
4. For use with a well derrick including a top structure, a bracket adapted to be secured to said structure adjacent each corner of said derrick, each of said brackets including vertical corner portions, a vertical stud on each of said members, said enlarged portions including hearing faces adapted to engage said vertical corner portions of said brackets, and a plurality of pulleys operatively mounted on said frame.
5. In combination with a well derrick including a top structure, a bracket secured to said structure adjacent each corner of said derrick, each of said brackets including projecting vertical corner portions arranged at right angles to each other, a vertical stud on each of said brackets, a coiled spring surrounding each stud, and a frame positioned on said springs, said frame comprising a plurality of structural members secured together, a member at each corner of said frame, said comer members each having an enlarged portion and being rigidly secured to said structural members, said enlarged portions each including bearing faces arranged at right angles to each other and adapted to engage said vertical corner portions of said brackets.
