5 Spring Bed-Bottom.
No. 224,835. Patented Feb. 424, 1880.
N PETERSy PHDTO-UYHOGRAPHER, WASMINBTON, D C.
A i il w t if UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN RIMGLAIN, OF FOND DU LAG, WISCONSIN.
SPRING. I eED-Boir'olvi.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of` Letters Patent No. 224,835, dated February 24, 1880,
4 Application filed December 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WARREN B. McLAlN,
of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprin g1 Bed-Bottoms; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure l is a top or plan view of my improved spring-bed; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section through the line :v :o of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a detail perspectiveview; Fig. `4L, a longitudinal vertical section through the line y y, Fig'. l, Fig. 5, a transverse vertical section through the line a b,`Fig. l. Fig. 6, an enlarged detail section of the bracketl).
Myinvention consists in the general construction of parts, |all as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will noW proceed to describe the exact manner in which it is carried out.
In the drawings, b represents the grooved end rails, and c the notchedside rails, rigidly connected together by the socketed and hookshaped clamps u..
B `B represent`vertical side supports or bracketsinounted on the transverse rail C.
D represents a central support or'bracket mounted on the cross-springs gg for centrally supporting the transverse springs f f, through which pass the transverse rods F.
YE represents a series of hooked plates secured to the top side of the end rails, and to which thelongitudinal trusses or coiled springs fl/can be adjustably secured in position.
i The construction of the bed-bottom in detail isas follows: The frame is composed of side rails, c, and end rails, b, jointedtogether by `notching the top ends of the side rails, so as to fit into grooves b', formed in the end rails, b. The side and end rails are secured together at their joints by the socketed andhookfastening at each joint, all as clearlyshown in Figs. 2 and 4.
Running lengthwise of the frame are a series of coiled springs, It, connected to the end rails by hook-plates E.
Near each end of the end rails I :attach to the hooked plates E a series of longitudinal trusses or coiled springs, y, supporting, midway of the bed, the central cross-Slat, C, having mounted upon it near its ends the supports or brackets B, the upper sides of which are provided With a series of studsno, to which the ends of the transverse coiled springs j' are secured, a-nd also the transverse trusses or coiled springs g, which support, midway of their length, the support or bracket l), which acts as a bridge for the springsf. I pass the straight rods F through the coils ofthe springs or cords j', to key them at their points ofintersection with the longitudinal springs h, as clearly shown in Fig.
The hooked plates E permit of the tension of the springs bein g regulated by merelydrawing them as tight as desired and hooking one of the coils of the spring over the vertical hook or stud c of said plates.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the longitudinal trusses or coiled springs y, ofthe transverse slat C, supports or brackets B B, mounted on said slats, central support, D, longitudinal coiled springs h, cross-springs f, having intern al straight Wires, F, and transverse trusses or coiled springs g, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
