June 17, 1941. 0. Y. KYTE COMBINATION HAT PRESS AND HANGER Filed April 23, 1940 Patented June 17, 1941 UNITED STATES PA EN OFFICE I p 2,246,369 COMBINATION HAT PRESS AND HANGER Olin York Kyte, Dunmore,PaiylVIary'Mitchell Kyte executrix'. of said Olin York Kyte, dc-
Application April 23, 1940, see; No. 331,223
3 Claims. (c1. 223 -57) This invention relates to a combination hat press and hanger, and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in connection with hats having broad brims.
It i also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind so constructed and assembled to effectively engage the brim of a hat and in a manner whereby the device not only serves as a hanger for the hat but at the same time imposes pressure upon the brim.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved combination hat press and hanger whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will here inafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a combination hat press and hanger constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in rear elevation of the device as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially n the line 33 of Figure 1 with an applied hat diagrammatically indicated by broken lines.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved device comprises two plates I and 2. These plates are of substantially the same dimensions and as herein embodied have an elliptical contour although I do not wish to limit myself to any particular design.
The plate I constitutes the back plate while the second or front plate 2 in its central part is provided with a relatively large opening 3 through which is adapted to be disposed from within the crown of a hat so that the brim of the hat may be disposed between the plates I and 2 as particularly illustrated in Figure 3.
The upper and lower or opposite end portions of the rear plate I are each provided with a pair of transversely spaced openings 4 or 5, the openings 4 being at the top and the openings 5 at the bottom. Each pair of these openings 4 and 5 is spaced apart transversely of the rear plate I and equidistantly spaced from the transverse center of the plate. The openings 4 are disposed on an upward incline while the openings 5 are a pair of transversely spaced openings 6 also disposedon an upward incline and which. sub
stantially register with the openings 4 when the plate I and 2 are in normal overlying relation. The lower or bottom portion of the front plate 2 is provided with the transversely spaced openings 1 disposed on a downward incline and which substantially register with the openings 5 when the plates I and 2 are in their normal relation.
It is to be stated that the plates I and 2 may be of wood, composition of wood or any other material possessing sufficient rigidity.
Threaded from the front through the associated openings 4 and 6 of the plates I and 2 respectively are the side strands 8 of an elongated fiexible loop L. These strands 8 are also threaded from the r ar through the openings 5 and l. The loop L is formed from a single length of material doubled upon itself and after the strands 8 have been properly threaded through the opposite end portions of the plates l and 2 the free end portions of the strands 8 are suitably tied together, as at 9.
It is to be stated that the loop L is of such length to permit the requisite raising or lifting of the front plate 2 to clear the crown of a hat when applying or removing the same.
With the crown of the hat disposed through the opening 3 of the front plate 2 the brim of the hat will be disposed between the outer marginal portions of the plates I and 2 and as the plates are freely mounted upon the strands 8 of the loop L, said plates will move by gravity toward the lower end portion of the loop thereby assuring maximum pressing action upon the rim of the hat between the plates throughout the period when the device is in suspension as by engaging the upper end portion of the loop L over a hook, nail or the like.
The angular relation of the openings 4, 5, 6 and I also serves to facilitate the desired pressing coaction between the plates I and 2.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a combination hat press and hanger constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A combination hat press and hanger comprising two plates, one of said plates having an opening through which the crown of a hat is to be inserted from the rear to bring the brim of the hat between the plates, each of the plates at diametrically opposed points being provided with transversely spaced openings, the :openings of one plate substantially registering with the openings of the second plate when said, plates are in overlying relation, and a closed loop having its side strands freely threaded through said openings.
2. A combination hat press and hanger comprising two plates, one of said plates having an openingthrough which the crownlof a hat. is to beinsertedfrom the rear to bring the brim of the hat betweentheplates, .each ofthe plates at diametrically opposed points being provided with transversely spaced openings,:the.openings Of'LOl'lB aplate substantially registering with the openings of the second plate when said plates are in overlying relation, and a closed loop having its side strands freely threaded through said openings, the openings at each end portion of the plates being forwardly and outwardly inclined.
3. A combination hat press and hanger comprising .two plates, one of said plates having an opening through which the crown of a hat is to be inserted from the rear to bring the brim of the hat between the plates, each of said plates at diametrically opposed points being provided l with'openings,.the openings of one plate substantially registering with the openings of the secondplate when said plates are in overlying relation, a flexible member freely threaded through the registering openings, the portion of the-member between the openings being to the rear of the plates, means carried by the flexible member for coaction with the plate having the hat crow-n opening forlimiting the downward movement of the-plate when the device is suspended from a suitable support-by the flexible member.
