Description
J. R'. LOCK-E. Carriage-Spring.
Patented Feb. 17, 1880.
I/V/T/vfssfs.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
`JOSEPH R. LOCKE, OF AMESBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
CARRIAGE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,597, dated February 1'?,4 1880.
Application filed July 12, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. JOSERH It. LOQKE, ot' Amesbury, State of Massachusetts, have invented Improvements in Carriage-Springs, of `which the `following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to effect al1 improved combination, in vehicles, ot torsion al der work provided with my invention.
and semi-elliptic springs; and the invention consists in the `construction andcombination of the springs, as will be fully described in the specification andspecied in the claims.
'scroll ends terminating in a small central eye and mounted on axle B; andbis alike springA mounted on headvblock G.
c care two torsion-springs, formed with a central member or angle, g, an angle, L, for attachment to the body, and the angle i, forpat- L t-achment to spring a. by a short angle (shown at k,) which passes through and issecured `in the eye formed at the end ot' and in the center of the scrolls of spring c.
dotare two springs, formed like c c, and are attached to the body and spring b in the same manner that springs c o-are. The angles h of springs c l are secured to the body by a bolt, screw, or clip, and the bearings j, near the ends, with an eye in the center to receive end i 7c ofthe torsional springs, an inexpensive,`
noiseless, and efiicient connection of the springs is effected; and the arms t', which are arranged out ot' plane with arms IL, and with their outer ends below the inner ends, are not cramped by the cross-springs, for the reason that such scrolls admit ot' expansion. and displacement in every direction; and the arms i may be vibra-ted to any required extent when in use, and the lateral yielding ot' such scrolls readily conforms to the thrust or retractin g movements otA the ends ot' arms fi. y
The central section, c, and end sections, ff, ofthe iioor are slightly thicker than the adjacent parts, in order that parts g of the torsionsprings may be slightly removed therefrom.
I claim `neither the torsion nor semi-elliptic springs, nor do I broadly claim the combination thereof 5 but What l do claim is- The combination ot' the torsional springs o f1, having the pivotal angle-lc, and the semi-elliptic springs c I), having the open scroll ends7 with a central eye to receive the pivoted angle 7c of the torsionsprin gs, substantially as specified.
