Application February 19, 1941, Serial No. 379,649
2 Claims.
My invention relates to a lamp adapted to be attached to a bed.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide a lamp having a construction for positioning the light providing means within the casing and for also attaching the lamp to a bed; to create means for attaching the lamp to the bed which will contact the bed at the fewest possible places and which will not scratch the bed; to supply a construction for firmly positioning the lighting means within the casing so that there will be no disconnection due to vibration and which will furnish maximum reading illumination; to provide a construction of maximum simplicity with a minimum of parts; to furnish a bed lamp economical in original cost and upkeep, simple to install or remove, and lasting in wear, and such other objects, advantages, and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred form of my invention, yet I desire it understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a front elevational view; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view; Fig. 4 is an end elevational view and Fig. 5 is a rear elevational view of my bed lamp; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 6--6 of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a plan view of the panel assembly, and Fig. 8 is a detailed sectional view on line 88 of Fig. 1.
The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a casing I0 of Bakelite, plastic or other suitable material, having an opening II in its front portion. A frame I2 surrounds said opening II on the inside of the casing I8 and has a pair of inwardly projecting portions I3 extending from each side of th frame [2 into the opening II. A translucent member I4 is positioned to cover said opening II with the inner side portions of said translucent member contacting the outer portions of said extensions I3 and the outer top and bottom portions of said translucent member extending beyond the corresponding portions of the frame I2 and contacting the inner surfaces of the top and bottom portions of the housing II]. The casing II] has an open back portion I5. At each of the iriner opposite ends of the casing I0 is a boss I3 having a screw threaded opening H.
A metal panel I8 has a main central body portion I9, a pair of integral raised portions 20, one on each side of said central portion I9, a pair of integral end portions 2 I, one on each side of said raised portions 20, and. a pair of extensions 22, one on the outer end of each of said end portions 2|. Each extension 22 has an opening 23 therethrough.
Attached to the inner surface of one of said end portions 2| is one portion of a right angle bracket 24. The other portion of the bracket 24 supports an inwardly extending electric light socket 25 adapted to hold an electric light bulb.
The panel I8 is attached to the housing Ill by placing the inner surfaces of the extensions 22 against the bosses I6, and by means of screws 25 extending through openings 23 in extensions 22 and into screw threaded openings I I in bosses I6. The ends of extensions 22 may be extended to bear against the inner surface of the end walls of housing I0 to hold panel I8 in position by friction grip.
A pair of clamping members 21 have their inner portions 28 attached to the inner surfaces of raised portions 20, and have integral hook portions 29 bent back below the outer surfaces of raised portions 20. A tubing 30 of rubber or the like is placed to cover hook portions 29. On the outer surfaces of raised portions 20 are attached felt members 3| to cooperate with the rubber tubing 38 on the clamping portions to prevent scratching of the bed to which the bed lamp is to be attached.
An electric light cord leads from socket 25 through an opening 32 in bracket 24 and opening 33 in end portion 2I of panel I8 to an electrical source of supply.
A switch has a connection 34 leading from the socket 25 rearwardly through opening 35 in the bottom portion of casing ID, with a manually operable knob 36 at the exterior of the casing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A bed lamp comprising a casing having an opening in its front portion and an open back portion, a removable translucent member attached to said casing and covering said opening in its front portion, a thin panel having a flat body portion of sufficient size to substantially cover the open back portion of said casing, said casing having therein a pair of inwardly extending spaced bosses at its opposite side portions, said bosses extending rearwardly within said casing and ending a distance short of the edges of said casing substantially equal to the width of said panel, said bosses having screw threaded openings at their rear ends, said panel having a pair of outwardly extending end portions integral with and of smaller size than said body portion, said end portions being flat and on the same plane as the body portion of said panel the inner surfaces of said end portions positioned to contact the spaced bosses at opposite side portions of said casing so that the outer surface of said panel lies substantially flush with the edges of said casing, removable screw threaded members extending forwardly through said end portions into the screw threaded openings of said bosses for attaching the end portions to said bosses, an electric light socket adapted to hold an electric light bulb positioned within said casing and attached to the inner surface of said panel, an electric light cord leading from said electric light socket extending through said panel and adapted to be attached to an electrical source of supply, and bracket members attached to said panel and having hook portions adapted to engage a bed.
2. A bed lamp comprising a casing having a window in its front portion and an open back portion, said casing having therein a pair of substantially deep, threaded, spaced bosses at its side portions, a panel having a fiat body portion and flat end portions on the same plane as said body portion, said panel extending across the open back portion of said casing, the end portions of said panel positioned against the outer ends of said bosses and lying substantially flush with the open back portion of said casing, removable members extending forwardly through the end portions of said panel and threaded into said bosses for attaching said panel to said casing, lighting means positioned within said casing and attached to said panel, and means attached to said panel for removably attaching th lamp to a bed.
