Description

UNITED STATES- d DAvID BUMGARDNER, 0F MERIDIAN, MIssIssIPPI. 1
PATIENT- OFFICE. Y
FEATHER-CLEANER.
sPEcIFIcATI'forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,3e4,datea February 1o, 1880.
y Application filed December 6, 1879. i I
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, DAvID BUIvIerARDNER,4 of Meridian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in ,Feather and Hair Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,
reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making apart of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal sectional ViewV of the drier, and Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe cleaner complete.
This invention has .for its Vobject the improvement' of machines for renovating feath-` ers, hair, and other similar substances; andV the nature of the invention consists in certain novel combinations of the devices used, whereby the substances to be renovated are cleanedl is a steam-pipe, C, provided with a regulatingcock, a', through which steam is let into box a, for the purpose of raising the temperature.
of the water to lukewarm heat, when impurities will be readily softened and removed with'- out depriving the feathers of their natural oil,
to which they owe their preservation and flexi-` Leading into the steam-space b' from the` boiler is a pipe, c2, having a cut-0E cock or valve, c3, by means of which steam is` admitted to the space b', or shut oft' therefrom, and
f its supply-is regulated at pleasure. The water nently and with a tight joint thereto. This tube connects withthe boiler by means of a pipe, d', having a regulating cock or valve, d2.
' As shown at e, Fig. 1, the other end of pipe Gr is rabbeted and extends completely-,through a short section of pipe H, having its bearings in the ends of the cylinders D D', and forming a steam-tight joint therewith..` This pipe H is rotated by means of a pulley, H', on its outer end, and has rigidly secured to it, 'within the cylinder D', one of the heads, e', of an 'agitating-wheel, J, the other head, f, of which turns loosely on the tube G, and consequently the rotation of `pipe H operates the wheel J to stir up the feathers in the cylinder D, which 4are introduced into it through a hinged door,
closing an aperture in both cylinders.r Steam is admitted into the pipe Gr through the steampipe d', and the water of condensation islet out therefrom by means of a cock, g, in its end. It will be observed that Ithe inner cylinder is not only surrounded by a steam-chamber,
but Vthat there is also a central chamber formed by pipesGr and H, which,`in connection with the exterior chamber, keeps up an equable temperature in all parts of chamber D.
It also will be seen that the feathers are dried without the direct contact'of the steam What I claim as new, and desire to secure A by Letters Patent, is'- 1. `The combination of a steam-generator, A,
Vandthe drier consisting of the cylinders D D',
the one within the other, and having the steam-space b' between them, the pipe c2, leading from the boiler to the said space, the rotary IOO pipe H in one end of said cylinders, the pipe G fixed in the other en d thereof, and having the rabbeted end e, extending through pipe H, the agitating-Wheel J, tiXed upon pipe H and turning loosely on pipe G, and the steam-pipe d', leading into the pipe Gr, substantially as specified.
2. The steam-drier consisting ot' the cylinders D D', arranged the one Within the other, and separated by the steam-space b', the rotary pipe H, the pipe G, fixed in the cylinder ends and extending through pipe H, the agitating- Wheel J, fixed on the said pipe and turning loosely on the pipe G, and steam-pipes opening into space b and into pipe G, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID BUMGARDNER.
