The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in mens undergarments, known as shorts.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a novel construction having a triple-ply section; to provide a novel construction, whereby a concealed iiy is provided, and to provide a construction that is ornamentalv as well as useful and which will' conform tothe anatomy and contour of the body.
I attain these and other objects of my invention by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a pair of shorts embodying my invention with a portion turned up and shownV in perspective;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure l with the portion of the garment thus sectioned, spread out Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 but extended the full length of the garment;
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the shorts with the waist in open position; Y
Fig. 5 is a front view of a modified form of the invention;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section through. the front of the modied form of the invention shown in Fig. 5, inverted;
Fig. '7 is schematic diagram of the parts forming the garment of. the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive;
CII
Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic View of the central strips including the plural rear central sections in the modification of the form shown in Fig. 7;
Fig. 9 is a diagrammatic View of the central strips including the single rear central section in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5;
Fig. l0 is a diagrammatic view of one-half of the frontal element of Fig. 1; and- Fig 11 is a diagrammatic View of the entire element 31 forming half of each layer used in the frontal element of Fig. 5. i
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings and especially to Fig. '7 which shows the elements diagrammatically, my garment has a trapezoidal rear central section I having a concave lower edge 2. The sides of this central section are parallel. Connected to section I is an inner crotch section 3 having a rear convex upper edge 4, like opposite arcuate side edges 5 and like front beveled or diagonally slanting edges 6. Also connected to edge 2 of member I is an outer crotch section 'I of identical shape to section 3.
and having a convex rear edge 8, arcuate side edges 9 and beveled front, edges Iii. Trapezoidal rear side sections I I are stitched along their rear edges I2 to the adjacent edges of the respective central sections. Sections II have relatively short side edges I3 and beveled edges I4 extending from the end of the lower short side edges I3 to the lower ends of the long side edges I2.
The trapezoid type of left front section I5 is stitched along its side edge I6 to the side edge I3 of the adjacent rear side section and is provided with an arcuate bottom edge I1 which is a part of the leg opening and has a beveled or diagonally slanting front edge I8 extending from edge I1 to the top of the substantially horizontal edge of the section.
The front of the garment is completed by a front section I9 having a side edge 20 of corresponding length` to the side edge I3 of rear section II and stitched to that member. Section I9 also has an arcuate lower edge 2| forming part of the leg opening. It also has a preferably concavely curved transverse lower free edge 22 constituting the inner edge of the concealed fly. It also has a beveled or diagonally slanting edge 23 extending Vadjacent to and stitched to the beveled front edge I8 of the left front section I5,
as shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 4. y
Lines of stitching 24 connectvthe adjacent edges of rear side sections I I with the rear central section I and the corresponding edges of crotch strips 3 and 1. A preferably convex line of stitching 25 secures the lower end of rear central section I to the crotch sections 3 and 1.
I provide a novel front diagonal trimming strip 25 extending from the waist band 35 to the left leg band 34; this trimming strip being secured throughout its length to the garment by the double line of stitching 2l and concealing the respective beveled edges I8 and 23 of front strips I5 and I9 respectively.
I also provide a reversely disposed trimming strip 23 extending from the waist band 35 to Y thel right leg band 34. Double lines of stitching 29 secure the upper portion of the trimming strip 28 to the front strip I5. The lower portion 30 of the trimming strip 29 is free from the adjacent front right Vsection I9 of the garment, the lower portion of that section constituting a concealed fly.
Double lines of stitching 3l secure the lower portion of trimming strip 28 to the upper horizontal edges of the crotch strips 3 and 1 respectively. The line oi stitching 32fastens together the beveled or diagonal edges i8 and 23 of members I and I9 respectively.
I provide novel leg bands 33 formed of the same knit material as the body of the garment and secured around the leg openings by the line of stitching 34. I also provide an elastic waist band 35 secured to the waist of the garment by stitching 36.
Referring to Fig. 8, I may provide a modication of the garment having a double rear central section la of the same shape and size as section l.
Figs. 5, 9, and l1 illustrate the modification of the invention in which the crotch members 3 and 1 are replaced by pairs of crotch members 31 secured together by a central line of stitching 38 and which together form a central crotch element of greater width and consequently more fullness at this portion of the garment, as shown in Figs. 5 and 9.
The construction described and shown provides a garmentof double thickness in the crotch section and of triple thickness in the lower front portion. As the garment is made from lightweight knit material with leg bands formed of the same material, it affords comfort to the wearer.
The front section IS of the peculiar shape shown provides a concealed fly and terminates in the front edge 22, having opening 30 under the sections 3 and 1 (or in the modification shown in Figs. 5, 9, and 11, under the section 31).
The trimming strip 26 has .a double function in concealing the lines of stitching 32, as well as reenforcing the garment and giving it a more ornamental appearance, while trimming strip 28 has the double function of concealing and reenforcing the edge portion of the adjacent edges 6 and Hl of crotch sections 3 and 1 (or of the substituted enlarged crotch section 31 in the modified form), and in giving the garment a balanced and ornamental appearance.
The garment as a. whole is of very light weight whileproviding additional thickness at certain portions where desirable, is flexible throughout including the portions adjacent the leg openings, has no buttons to come olf; and in the modification illustrated -in Figs. 5 and 9 and 11, provides additional space to accommodate the genital organs:
