Description

m. PELTHOUSEN. Gage-060k.
Nb. 224,330. Patented Feb. 10, 1880.
Witnesses: I Inventor:
'lER gr UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD G. FELTHOUSEN, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
GAGE- COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,330, dated February 10, 1880.
' Application filed December 29, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. FELT- HOUsEN, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on a Gage-Cock;
and I do hereby declare that the following.
operate in conjunction with a seat to close the.
vent-op ening,-said packing being so arranged as to be readily adjusted to compensate for wear.
To this end I construct my gage-cock as shown in the drawing already referred to, in which the figure. is a longitudinal sectional elevation, and in which, furthermore, the letterA designates a valve-body oonsistingof the tapering or otherwise constructed shank B, having a wrench-section, O,by means of which it is screwed il'lto the boiler-plate, and on its forward end a valve-seat, D, the entire body being centrally perforated with a vent-passage, E, for the escape of water or steam.
To the body A is pivoted a gravity-lever,F, by means of a pin, Gr, said lever having cen; trally an aperture, H, running longitudinally throughout its entire length and screw-threaded to receive an externally screw-threaded plug, I. This screw-plug I prefer to make of brass, or any other metal uninfluenc'ed by moisture, so as to prevent its being locked in the central aperture, H.
Within the aperture H, I place apacking-plug,
J, consisting, by preference, of either J enkins or J ohnsons packing, but which may also be made of brass, composition metal, rubber, Wood, or, in fact, of any material or metal now used for a like or similar purpose. This packing-block I prefer to make almost as long as the aperture H, (less the length of the screwplug 1,) which will allow the gage-cocks being used for almost an indefinite length of time before'renewal will be required, and having placed it into said central aperture I screw the screw-plug I against said packing, which will have the effect of pushing said packing againstthe seat D, and thereby make a tight joint.-
It is now perfectly evident that when leaky nothing remains to be .done but to slightly turn the screw-plug I to push the packingplug J out against the seat D, which action can be repeated as long as a piece of the packing-plug is left.
In some cases it may be necessary to remove the packing-plug. to square its face formaking a tight joint; but such will be but seldom required, and when necessary can be accomplished in a few moments time.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States- The gage-cock herein described, consisting of the body A, pivoted gravity-lever F, havin g a central longitudinal screw-threaded aper' ture, H, throughout its length, the packingplug J, loosely inserted therein, and the screwplug I, operating within said passage H, all constructed substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereto set my hand and aflixed my seal in the presence of two sub-' scribing witnesses.
EDWARD Gr. FELTHOUSEN. [L. s.]
