ZIZIZIZIZ'IZIZI Inventor Attorneys Patented May 13, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE STEAM PRESS HEAD William Guy Ivey, Sr., Amarillo, Tex. Application January 10, 1940, Serial No. 313,277
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes presses and has for its primary object to provide a detachable press head to facilitate the pressing of pants.
In the use of conventional types of pants presses it is usually necessary to change the position of the leg of the pants several times before the pressing operation is completed. This shifting of the pants leg on the press frequently causes irregularity in the creases, and it is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide detachable heads for steam presses of this character by means of which the leg of the pants may be pressed at a single operation.
A further object is to provide a detachable head for presses to enable heads of different sizes and shapes to be easily and quickly placed in position on the press.
A still further object is to provide apparatus of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a top plan view showing the detachable head in position for pressing the leg of the pants.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view showing the upper head in an open position and with parts broken away and shown in section.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the inside of one of the detachable heads.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view through the press, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 5 designates the top of the press head generally provided with a pair of laterally extending arms 6 for pivotally attaching the head as at 1 on the laterally extending arms 8 of the bottom press buck 9. The back plate of the head 5 is designated at l0 and to which is attached the steam hose H. The detachable head is shown generally at [2 for engagement with the top head 5 and a similar detachable head 13 is provided for the bottom press buck 9, the detachable head being of identical construction and accordingly, a detailed description of one will suffice for both.
The detachable head comprises a perforated plate l4, preferably of arcuate form in cross section to correspond to the cross sectional contour of the backing plate It), the plate [4 having upwardly projecting lugs IE to space the same from the backing plate Ill and to provide the steam chamber I6 between said plates.
The side and end edges of the plate l4 extend angularly as shown at I1 to close the edges of the chamber l6 and an attaching strip I8 is secured to the edge of the angular sides ll by means of screws l9 or the like, the attaching strip overlapping the edges of the backing plate ID as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. A pad 20 is secured against the outer surface of the plate l4 and is retained in position by a cover 2|.
As more clearly shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, the longitudinal side edges of the detachable head are inclined to provide a relatively narrow end 22 and. a relatively wider end 23. The wider end 23 is provided with an inwardly curved section 24 to accommodate the crotch portion 25 of the pants 26, when the leg of the pants shown at the dotted lines 21 in Figure 1 of the drawings is placed in position between the upper and lower press heads. The detachable heads are of sufficient area to enable the legs of the pants to be placed therebetween so that the entire surface of the leg of the pants may be pressed at a single operation.
It is believed the details of construction, operation and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a steam garment press, a pivoted upper press member and a stationary lower press buck and removable heads for the upper member and the buck, each of said heads comprising a perforated plate, spacing members on the plate to provide a steam chamber back of the plate, a pad carried by the outer face of the plate, angular flanges at the side and end edges of the plate and defining walls for the head positioned outwardly of the upper press member and the lower press buck and an attaching strip secured to said flanges, the strips of the respective plates overlying the adjacent edges of the press member and the buck.
