Application April 2, 1940, Serial No. 327,536
1 Claire.
This invention relates to a jar holder employed in the removal and in the application of a cover to the jar, and has for the primary object the provision of an eiiicient and inexpensive device of this character which may be firmly clamped on a table or like support and which may be readily adjusted to accommodate and tightly grip jars of different sizes so that the covers may be easily screwed on and off wihout danger of damage to the jars.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and acco-mpanying drawing, in Which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a jar holder construoted in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view illustrating the device.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing an opposite side of the device.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure l.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a base plate which is adapted to rest on a support such as a table or the like and hassecured thereto a U clamp 6 including a screw threaded clamping pin 1 equipped at one end with a head 8 to coact with the base plate in gripping the table or like support and is provided at its opposite end with a finger piece 9 to permit a person to readily grip and rotate the clamping pin. As will be seen in, Figure 3, one of the arm portions of the U clamp 6 is welded onto the top face of the base plate positioning the other arm portion in a plane below the base plate and in Which is threaded the clamping pin 1.
Opposed vertically arranged posts 10 and ll are formed on the base plate and have integral with the upper ends thereof an annular member i2. The posts and annular member coact in forming a frame on the base plate in which is positioned a jar when desiring to apply or remove the cover thereof and forms a support for a clamping mechanism including a fixed clamp plate i3 welded onto the post Il, base plate 5 and annular member |2 and is arcuately curved and provided with a cushion strip |4 on the gripping face thereof. The post 10 is provided with guide openings to slidably receive guide rods |5 formed on a movable clamping plate IG also equipped With a cushion strip ll on the gripping face thereof. The movable clamping plate IG is opposed to the fixed clamping plate I3 and has rotatably connected thereto an adjusting screw |8 threaded in the post ill and carrying a finger piece or handle 19 upon its outer end. The movable clamping plate IG has sliding contact with the top face of the base plate 5 and may be adjusted towards and from the fixed clamping plate l3 for the purpose of gripping jarsof different sizes.
To adjust the clamping plate IG relative to the clamping plate |3 the screw |8 is rotated by the hand piece.
In operation, after the application of the device on a support, the cl-amping plate IG is adjusted away from the clamping plate |3 and a jar is positioned on the supporting plate between the clamping plates. The clamping plate IB is then adjusted in the direction of the clamping plate |3 to bring about gripping of the jar by the clamping plates so that the jar will be held against rotation When the cover thereof is screwed on or oif of said jar.
The cushion strips M and ll may be constructed of rubber or any other material suitable for the purpose so as to prevent the clamping plates from marring or damaging the jar gripped thereby.
It is believed that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawing will fully set forth the construction and advantages of this invention to those skilled in the art to which such a device relates, so that further detainled description will not be required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A jar holder comprising a flat base plate, means for securing the plate in a horizontal position on a support to permit a jar to rest thereon in an upright position, opposed vertically arranged spaced posts formed on the plate With the jar therebetween, an annular member encircling the jar and rigidly Secured to the upper ends of the posts, an arcuately curved clamping plate rigidly fixed on one of said posts and the plate and the annular member, a second arcuately curved clamping plate of a size substantially equal to the size of the first clamping plate and opposing the latter and coacting therewith in gripping the jar at opposite sides thereof, one of said posts having guide openings and a screw threaded opening, a feed stem threaded in the screw threaded opening and rotatably Secured to the second clamping plate, and guide members formed on the second clamping plate and slidable in the guide openings.
